rotted transom... just wondering?

I picked up a boat just for the motor, it has a healthy 260 mercruiser in it.
But I'm wondering what could have hapened if someone had bought it to put on the water as it is.
I mean, it didn't look bad at all, but there's no wood left in the transom.
On an outboard the weight and torque of the engine would rip the transom apart but what about a mercruiser?

The transom is so soft that the 'D' ring on the left side pulled right through complete with the 1"x3" backing plate intact.

The trailer was borowed and I wanted to bring it back, if you're wondering why I would even do this ;)

what could happen? ... it could sink. the outdrive could rip the transom apart..... they could be publicly ridiculed

as for your vid.... had you gone slowly it prolly wouldn't have damaged even the rotten transom. I've done that without the snap many times and winched it back on

The reason for the 'snap' was because I was pulling on a bit of a grade and under that snow is just ice.
I had to make sure that once moving the jeep would stay moving!

Come spring I'll pull the motor out and I won't be the least bit surprised if the mounts come out of the stringers without unbolting them first!

Why? They never claimed it would stay above water. I'm pretty sure it's ready to take on water. :D

Kinda, I guess. But if the seller doesn't know and honestly believes his boat is still good...

What I was really wondering is how long or what would it take to rip the transom on a boat in that shape?
Could it go on for a few more summers or would it sink the next time out?
I poped holes all over that transom and I didn't get any wood anywhere, it was more like wet paper bag (frozen, wet paper bag).

How many boats are out there, in that shape and the owners don't even have a clue?

I THINK maybe OOPS missed that you were asking a hypothetical question about another imaginary boat with an imaginary seller and imaginary buyer.... at first glance it looked like you were considering selling the boat instead of trashing it.

as for your question at best, the transom assembly would have MANY layers of silicone globbed all over it and the bilge pump would run constantly..... it MIGHT stay afloat..... generally it would sink long before the transom physically ripped apart because the transom assembly clamps together and can't seal with the wood rotted out

It kinda scares me how many in just as bad of shape as yours are on the water all summer.

What is worse most of the owners have no idea the danger they are putting themselfs and others in.

Smoke you should spend a weekend at haspin acers it would change the way you feal about the xj's

Being an I/O it may have made another summer but eventually it would have cracked and started taking on water, if it were an out board it probably would have peeled the transom off the boat the first time you tried full throttle, an I/O pushes from the bottom of the hull so has less stress on the transom where an outboard is twisting from the top and is much harder on a transom.
