Great forum.
 I am looking at 89 Bayliner with 5.0
The reason I am telling you this I am wondering if it is worth $2500 with a rotten floor.
what would a boat shop charge to repair?
Has anyone replace a floor in a 19.6 ft boat or should I walk away from this one? The V-8 really lookes in nice shape.

Well......your rotted floor just may be the "tip of the iceberg"... under the floor the stringers may be rotted and the transom may be in trouble too. Do further investigation and also post the question under the project boat forum.

If you are willing to do all the work yourself it can be rewarding when finished. What size boat is it? The price could be on the high side if allot of work is needed.

If you do some checking under "search" and type in the word Bayliner just be advised the comments are not for the weak at heart. Heck Bayliner gets more bashing here than terrorists!

Good luck,

Bob

No way. Not $2500.
$500 - $1000 is more in line especially if the engine/outdrive is good. If the floor is that rotted enough to not even walk on the stringers are rotted for sure. My 85 Bayliner had a few soft spots in the floor. Now, it did have the dreaded Force outboard, but otherwise was in nice shiny hull, good condition. I had just put on trim tabs, all new wiring, galvanized trailer in good shape. SOld for $2200. You will end up replacing the floor. If I was doing it, I would use this stuff for the stringers:

http://www.rotdoctor.com/

And then seal it in with new treated marine plywood. For $500 it would make a nice driveway project. Any more then that, and its just not worth it.

Keep in mind that if the boat has an aluminum tank under the deck like Bayliners used to, it may not be in the best shape either. Had an older Bayliner myself once and found all this out the hard way.

What is the aluminum tank used for?
What did you find wrong with yours? Does the 89 have this tank you speak of?

Yes, the gas tank. Mine was pitted and corroded from always being wet, along with some galvanic action. It leaked into the inner hull of the boat and it was a wonder I didn't blow myself up. I later participated in a Coast Guard survey on this problem and their results showed this to be a very common problem on this type of tank installation. Also, every inch of wood under the deck was rotten. It was a messs that wasn't worth the trouble to fix.

Sorry. Neglected to reply to your other question. I don't knpw how your tanks are set up. My Bayliner was a much earlier model. If you can't see it, it's under the deck.

Here I go. My first boating experience/prodject. I did get it for $1000. Now the fun starts, in the yard that is. I think I will play with it in the water first and then start the land prodject.
What are some good online or catalog parts co?

welcome to boat ownership, :)
depending how rotten the stringers are, you may
want to re-think taking out as it could damage
the hull. stringers keep the fibreglass rigid
and if they are mush, the hull can flex and crack.
a good idea to carefully inspect the hull now
and see if there are any cracks starting.
the only way to know for sure is pull up a section
of the floor and look at them. they may not be
that bad and will allow you to enjoy the rest of
the season. better to be SAFE than sorry IMHO.
enjoy!
M.Y.
