Rope will not retract by it self

I have a Model 120 20HP outbd. Mercury My rope will not retract by itself so a fried told me to spray wd40 on the rope mechanism so I did now not only I still have the same problem plus I need to pull the rope 2-3 times short strokes so my starter to engage.,Please help.,

hi it's probably your spring in the recoil......been there before and it's a real pain,take it off and if you can't fix it with a new spring take it to a shop won't cost ya much
