I have an Evinrude 6 and an 8 hp O/B. The 8 HP has a frayed recoil start rope. I am going to replace it before it breaks, and by the time I follow the manual and do the 8 HP, I may as well do the 6 as well while it is still fresh in my mind.
The shop2evinrude site does not even list the part number any longer.

I know they just sell the rope from bulk and cut to length at OMC dealers, but the closest one is a good hike. There are a number of power equipment dealers quite close who would doubtless have the rope as well for recoil starters on their stuff.

Does anyone know what the spec'd diameter of the rope would be?

I believe it is 5/32". Make sure to get the professional starter rope from a spool, and not the pre-packaged sections they sell at wally world.

You can take the old in with you? Cut a piece out.

I keep starter rope at the hose . Cut off the spool myself, works for this gs like this and I sell it on the side to cover my parts cost so when I need it mine is free

You should find the rope diameter and lengths in one of the appedicies at the back of the manual here http://boatinfo.no/lib/library.html

Also do a YouTube search for rewinding the recoil spring using an electric drill and zip ties. It works really slick.

Thanks for all responses.
I could not take a sample of the rope in because it was still installed....:) and because it was at the cottage.
I don't need the Youtube video because i actually was uncharacteristically doing this as a proactive measure rather than an "oh sh%$ " repair. If you don't mess with the spring, replacing the rope is a 5 minute job. :)
I called the OMC dealer and he was not really sure but as far as he could tell his literature "suggested" it was 1/8" D.
My local lawn mower/snowblower etc. dealer had Husqvarna starter cord that was about 5% larger but it works beautifully. Rope spec was 0.140" instead of the nominal 0.125" for 1/8".

What was really odd IMO was that before I left the cottage last week I checked the shop2evinrude site and it listed the rope as a part number but said "NLA".
That didn't worry me but it verified that both my motors take the same rope so I would just take the part number along when I went to the OMC dealer..
But in the three days between that and when i was back in the city they updated the website and removed that part number. Strange.

One side note....if anyone has the "official" manual, and has replaced the rope using the knot that they illustrate, I would be interested to know how much fun that was.....IMO there is NO way that that size knot will ever nest into the slot and not interfere with the operation of the starter.
