Rope retraction and storage device...

Hey guys/gals,

I'm looking for a nifty little rope storage device for our small pleasure craft. Essentially, I guess I'm looking for an over sized tape measure type device that spools rope. Is there anything like this on the market? Anybody have any experience with one?

Just sick of having rope everywhere!

Thanks

Re: Rope retraction and storage device...

I looked at the Airhead rope winder and decided it was a bit flimsy for winding my anchor line. I made a line holder from some 1/2 in PVC plumbing pipe. Sort of an rectangle with tabs sticking out of both ends to keep the rope on. Works very well, quick to make, and doesn't cost a lot.

Size of the holder is determined by the amount and size of the line. On the plus side if the PVC tubes are capped the thing will float if dropped overboard. Just secure the end of the line to the holder.

hose reel, or better, hose reel in a box.

Might not be strong enough to winch up the anchor, but good for storage, especially on a deck boat/pontoon.

BTW loose rope doesn't tangle as bad as coiled rope.

The right type of line stops tangles.

I use those winder things for ski lines and tow ropes for tubing. I have 150' anchor line that used to be a tangled mess. I now loop up half of it and tie it off as I never use more than half. I put the coiled end in the anchor storage locker first, then the rest of the line, followed by the chain and anchor. Never a tangle.

The bow/stern cleats on my granddad's late-70's Newman bass boat had a pass-through hole for the line which was on a retracting spool. Made tying off to the dock really easy when the line was always at hand and would retract when not connected to anything. The front spool never had an issue, but the rear spool was sometimes finicky and you'd have to hand-feed the line back down into the hole in the middle of the cleat. I think the spools are probably fine for short lengths of line (<25') but likely get line twist and other issues when you get into longer lengths of line.

have you looked at a Minn Kota anchor mate, there are several brands, they are small don't use a ton of power and will do what you want.

I have had one on my boat for 2-3 years and love it to death, I am in Indiana and the water gets pretty cold late in the year and not having to deal with anchor rope is great.
iboats has these and for a really good price too,

I just let my line dangle in the water back by the prop, it winds it up faster and tighter than anything!

Hi guys,

My friend pointed me towards these guys. Anybody have any experience with them? From their website, $300 bucks each or 4 for $1200. Seems a little on the high side. Are there any other products out there like this one? Anybody purchase these? Do they work well and are they worth the effort and money?

Thanks

If you are still in need of a rope coiling and storage device you should check out Re-coil. It was specifically designed for re-coiling and storing rope for boaters. I didn't see the Re-Coil product on iboats.com, but I was able to get one on ******** last year.

I don't care for the silver model, but the blonde one might be worth it. I think I would be somewhat concerned about storing line in a manner that can't dry easily. Wouldn't reeling up line promote mildew? I store my braided anchor line in a well ventilated milk crate as in the thread in my signature and never have any tangling issues. Whenever possible, I stretch the wet line on the floor of the cockpit to dry before storing. - Grandad
