I have been looking at trope lighting for possibly placeing in my boat for night fishing. Has anybody ever done this? I am curious if it it is a good light source, just enough to see what your doing but not too much.

Re: Rope Lighting

I've always thought some localized lighting like that of a rope light under the gunwales would be nice- hadn't considered the bugs... But if you are out on the water you have your all-around light on anyway, right? So you have some light already. I suppose some LEDs or rope lights on a switch as convenience or occasional lighting would be OK.

If you decide to use the rope lights you might want to try the green ones. They dons seem to draw as many bugs and still give off amply lighting.

Re: Rope Lighting

I've thought about a variety of ways to light the boat, but never rope lighting. I supposed if I put it on the outside of the boat it would work. It would light up so I could see to net the fish and it would also light up my rods sticking out over the boat. I definitely would not want them inside the boat. I just might have to try it.

With everything else I've tried, I always come back to just using a small LED light that clips on my hat. That way I always see what I'm looking at, and it doesn't produce too much light.

Re: Rope Lighting

What I was thinking was the real low power kind in green. I have heard green doesn't draw as many bugs. I carry one of the cap lights and haven't thought about it as the only light. That might work since mostly the light is just for rigging and sometimes comfort. It is amazing how differant the sounds are at night way back up in an isolated creek. 95% of my fishing ,day or night, is Bass fishing so I was just looking for a more complete boat light as far as area. The little box blacklights just don't light up the whole boat.

Re: Rope Lighting

we just tackled this one... first of all, use amber or red so you do not weck your night vision then mount them under the gunwale.

i was going to use rope light - but could not find it. Just wanted to use the outdoor xmass lights and mod it for our setup.

But I got lucky - last year I bought trailer guideons and they came with lights - but I did not want/need them for that since our docks are brightly lit. So I took them and mounted them under the gunwale and installed a on/off switch at the dash. THEY ROCK! They are two toned but we're kind of free since I had them laying around!

We can motor back to the dock and tear down the gear without ruining our night visions.

good luck!

Re: Rope Lighting

I looked yesterday at some at lowes for using on your deck and thought about getting those and using a power inverter. But after touching the ones on display they get pretty hot, like I need anymore heat during a summer night. I think I will look at some small LED lights for rigging and just use the blacklight for the constant light.

Re: Rope Lighting

how about using the led rope lights, just about as bright as the regular rope light but much less power consumption.......

Re: Rope Lighting

walmart has the red/green bow lights for about $5. mount one under something so it gives off light but you cant see the light itself so it doesnt blind you. no power conversion needed

I use two 18" black lights. I found that they don't draw bugs and it provides plenty of light in the boat....also if your using mono line it glows so its easy to tie if you have too.
