How cold should an approximate 10,000 btu air conditioner run at the vent? I have this sitting outside, on saw horses, with ambient air temp at about 82deg, with a thermometer in the exhaust vent. It feels pretty cold but is just registering 55 degrees.

On a good window unit you can get 20 - 25 degree drop across the coils.
On a good central unit you can get 20 degree drop across the coils.
Looks like your window unit is working good.

I was going to say about 55 degrees...thats what the old one in the window behind me puts out. Although it's only 5k BTU...

And the difference will vary somewhat from one time to another due to humidity changes.

That is a decent split in temp. While you have it out, clean the condenser coil. They may look clean, but a dirty coil will hamper its ability when it is real hot out. Long term use will weaken or destroy the compressor due to a dirty condeser coil. This is the most probable cause of failure with A/C units.
