I am looking for a new rod.
I think I am looking for a long casting flexible soft rod, in ML or Light action.
I have plenty of graphite rods, and thought a glass rod might do the trick.

A rod that I can watch the tip for movement.
Maybe 6' or 6.5'. Something like an Ugly Stick Lite. I can't seem to find many rods that are not graphite, or that are much heavier than I want.

To be fished with 4-12lb line.

Something for under $80??

ANy suggestions?

roscoe
I do not know if you are looking for spining or casting. In that weight I would think spining. My favorites are all Star hand crafted rods. It is a graphite core and a E Glass outer. Much more flex than straight graphite. Anyway Eangler.com has a big selection of rods. May be a place to start. The Star rods may still be to heavy for what you want but click on rods and they have many brands.

http://www.eangler.com/proshop/productdetail.asp?prod_id=2359&dept_id=442

Those do look interesting, I wish I could pick it up and see how it feels. Maybe I can find a dealer in WI and check them out.

Yeah, looking for spinning. But if I could find a casting rod with those characteristics, and capable of casting a small jig and a minnow without whipping it off, I'd buy it.

thanks

I like cabelas eglass rods myself. I'm to cheap to buy the g loomis or st. croix crankbait rods. The cabelas fit the bill ( and budget) perfectly. They have plenty of give but enough back bone to actually land the fish as well. This is just my opinion so ugly stick fans please don't flame me. I can't stand ugly stick's. Too me they don't have the greatest sensitivity in the world. And the actions seem to be lighter than what is stated. But as I stated that's just my opinion. :)

Re: Rod recommendation, glass or combo?

Hey guys,

my 2 cents, I have G-loomis, Abu, southbend, Daiwa, Okuma, shimano and an Ugly stick. I would say that my only knock against the ugly stick is the backbone factor, but that depends on how big of a fish you plan on landing. I myself think anything over 20lbs is harder to control with an ugly stick. Don't get me wrong they are a great rod and I like it for casting, that to me is the one thing it does really well. What about a lamiglass? Money well spent, that will be my next rod I buy.

http://www.lamiglas.com/materials.html

Well put, that was what I was trying to say, not enough backbone. :)

Re: Rod recommendation, glass or combo?

Rod will be used for small fish, perch, crappie, and maybe a walleye.

I have an ugly stick which I bought 20 years ago, but it is too heavy, have looked at their lighter stuff, but not quite what I'm looking for.

I already have many IM6, IM7, IM8, graphite rods, and a GLoomis and 2 St Croix graphite.

But now I want something light and whippy.
A rod that will bend under the weight of a mosquito. :p
I concidered another StCroix, but their glass rods are targeted for musky, too heavy for the little guys.

I have a fly rod which I have only used twice, its about what I'm looking for. Maybe I should think about replacing the guides and tip with larger spinning rod guides???

Well, I'm off to Gander Mountain, to see what they may have.

Roscoe
A good tough fun rod for kids with lots of flex but still some backbone try Cabela's Whuppin stick. Cheap also 19.99 to 24.99. Fiberglass so much better for kids than graphite. Go to Cabela's and serch for Whuppin stick then pick one near the bottom that says 19.99 to 24.99.

I bought my kids when young 2 Ulgy sticks 9' 8 to 20 rateing. Both rods still good and a fun striper rod but not enough backbone to be a good rod.

http://www.cabelas.com/texis/scripts/store/+/searchForm?EXss=hook+file

A good tough fun rod for kids
Its not for kids, its for me. Well, ok, I see your point. :p

Here is what I found at Gander Mountain a few hours ago. This is the first time I have been in the new store. WOW. The just expanded from 20,000sq', to over 90,000sq'.

They had over 300 reels on display. 120 linear feet of wall space, dedicated only to musky baits, some were over 20" long.
And aisle and aisles of rods and lures.

So, the rods:
Ugly Stik Lite Pro 6'2" light action. $37, better than I expected.

Rapala 9' Light action IM6 I think. $70, felt pretty good.

StCroix Wild River Series SCII Graphite:
9' moderate action, light $120, felt real nice.
or
10.5' slow action, Ultra Lite $135, Felt a little like trying to hold a piece of spaghetti. :p
I think this is built on a flyrod blank, but it has spinningrod guides.

No Lamiglas.
No Star.
No other glass rods, unless you were looking for a stump puller.

Cabelas EGlass are all Medium or Med/Heavy.
But they have a 6'6" Whuppin stick, ML, for $20.

Hmmmmm.?

Re: Rod recommendation, glass or combo?

So, I take it from the lack of alternative suggestions, that the rest of you are using casting rods, stumppullers, saltwater rods, or 84m modulus graphite rods.

Well, if nobody stops me (haha), I'm gonna change the guides on my fly rod. If that doesn't work out too well, then I will go shopping again.

Re: Rod recommendation, glass or combo?

Roscoe
I am like you have to pick the rod up and feel how it balanced, see how it flexes, count the guides, even put a reel on it before I buy it. Still I have bought several thru the catalogs and like every one. Each time I had to call and get the details specks, tip size, number of guides, length of handle, type guides, ect. Talking fly rods I have one my uncle gave me when I was 14, used it about half a day before I snagged a tree behind me and broke about 4 inches off the tip. Decided I did not like fly fishing so converted it to a spinning rod. I caught more crappie and stripers on that rod for the next years than any other rod I had. It was not a very good rod but a lot of fun. After that I built 4 or 5 rods just like I wanted them, a lot of work but fun too. Still hard to see the blanks mostly picking out from catalogs. Still you get the handle, guides, reel seat, your want.

The Wuppin Stick has a soft tip and good backbone. Useing it for Black Bass worm rod you will never feel the tick when the bass suck in the worn. You might see the tip move a little but for me just feel the extra weight of the bass hanging on to the worm when lift the rod.

Thank for talking about Gander Mountain I thought they sold out to Cabela's years ago. I use to buy a lot of stuff from them. I did not see a Catalog on their web site so maybe just out of the catalog business.
Good luck Finding a rod.

Re: Rod recommendation, glass or combo?

Boatist, I built my first 2 rods this winter, after practicing on a couple of old ones. Luckily I am only 50 miles from the StCroix factory, and 50 miles from Gander Mtn, so I was able to go and check out the rods, and then buy the exact blank that they use. I took a few shortcuts (no titanium guides) to keep the cost down. Can't wait to try them on the water.

I haven't seen a Gander catalog in a long time. They don't sell on the net either. They are putting up stores all over the area. They have about 50, 25 of which are in WI and MN. They do put out plenty of fliers in the newspaper.

I guess the 9' Rapala and the 10.5' StCroix fall into the noodle rod catagory. They are rated for 1/16 oz lures, and 2-4# line. I think they would be fun to try out, but I'm not sure. Maybe if I sell a few more items on ebay, I'll spend the money.

About getting your hands on them, I checked out the splines on several of the expensive rods, and was shocked at how many of them were way off. I guess thats why some people make their own.

The best rod out there is one that doesn't break when slammed down during a hissy fit when a miss occurs.
