I`m rebuilding a `75 evinrude 25 hp this winter, I disassembled the motor this past summer , honed cyl`s and had everything marked and ready to be put back together when parts and time allowed. Well, the paint I had on the rod end caps has dissappered( I`m thinking from the oil I have everything coated in). Is there anyway to properly i.d which rod and which way they fit together? Thanks

Should be easy.----These are cracked when they manufacture them.-----They will only fit one way.-----Take the time to examine them.-This must be done correctly or your engine will come to a dynamic halt.

Yep, as "racerone" states.... those connecting rods are cast in one piece, then the caps are broken away to form a two piece rod. The cap will only fit one rod perfectly. It'll click and snap right in. It's best when you take those things apart to put the cap back on the related rod... immediately.

Aren't you glad it's not a V6? :)

Sometimes the end of the caps and rod where they a split have a slight mark/scratch manufactured on them which will line up when the correct cap is used

These rods are fractured when they are made!-----The joints are " unique " and it will be easy to see how they fit.----There will also be 2 round bumps.---Try them on one rod and it will be abundently clear when you have the right cap on the rod.
