I'm rebuilding my 1986 200 Evinrude. The manual says to use a rod bearing alignment fixture or damage will be done. My question is do I need it or is there a better way? Where can I get one if needed?

You don't need the fixture. If you look closely, you will see these rods' have a broken seam, and will only fit one way. Carefully tighten the rod, side to side, checking the seam with a lead pencil as you go. If the cap is out of alignment, you will feel it with the pencil.

Exactly. The tool doesn't have anything to do with the bearing. It's to align the cap only. We've found it's easier and better to do it by hand.

Can you explain with a little more detail. I don't understand the pencil thing.

Where the rod cap joins the rod there's a seam. That seam should be almost invisible if aligned properly. If you run a pencil over the outside, making a mark across the seam, the pencil shouldn't grab.
