Good Afternoon!
I have a `82 Sea Ray with a Mercruiser 2.5L with a rochester carb. As it gets warm outside, I want to have try and get it ready for the water. Last summer I had a problem with getting WOT on this boat, and also bogging down under acceleration, out of the hole. Anyways, I took the carb off, Rochester 2GV serial number 17059054 216 1 1. That is the number that I was able to get off the carb. There is also a number on a silver tab that is connected to the carb, which is 1351-7354
The main thing that I noticed when I took it off, and apart was that is was FILTHY. In addition to EVERYTHING being filthy, I noticed when I took the fueal discharge cluster off, there were supposed to be two little inserts, the rebuild manual calls these things well tubes. Those were not there. What problem could this cause? In addition to these being missing, could anyone tell me where to get these? They did come in my rebuild kit and do they absolutely need to be there for achieving WOT? Any help with this would be greatly appeciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: Rochester 2GV Carb Question

I apologize for the dual posts but I have 2 more questions. The rebuild book also says that around the fuel inlet needle and seat there is supposed to be a fuel baffle? Just a metal plate that surrounds the seat and fuel inlet. Is this supposed to be there either? or is it different for a marine engine, hence the reason it is not there.
The other question, is that there is a tube that transfers heat from the exhaust manifold to the choke housing, and that tube has rusted though and it actually twisted off when I removed the carb. so if anyone knows where I can find this, once again it would be greatly appreciated.

If the missing parts are the tubes shown in blue in the picture below of the venturi cluster, forget about the parts, you need a new carb.

Nope, those tubes are still there, I am talking about the plastic inserts that actually get inserted into the bores in the carb. Those are missing.

actually the two tubes in the middle are the ones that slip into the inserts in the carb.

Re: Rochester 2GV Carb Question

With all due respect to the higher ups on this forum, I want to ask why get a new carb? If there are rebuild kits out there, and this appears to be dirty, and missing two little well tubes which, I found out last night after some researching on my own, help with hot condition and idling, why not rebuild? These HAVE to be available somewhere, and I think that I owe it to my checkbook to at least try the cheaper option first. Plus, I am a newbie to the world of carburetion and a not so newbie to the world of being towed in on the small lakes that have plagued Ohio. So if I break down I will not have a problem with it. I think this is a strong little carb, and really, it started the boat up every time, and through all my frustration with WOT last season, it did give me a couple of trips without problems. Besides, I already have the rebuild kit, so I think I will give it a shot, no disrespect intended, once again to the higher ups of this forum. I simply feel that in this world that we have gotten accumstomed to throwing things away because of the massive influx of cheap goods from China, and nobody really gives redoing or LEARNING how to redo anything anymore, and more than saving money, I want to KNOW how this stuff works. So I guess I will just go on researching on my own. Thanks for the advice, which I may end up taking in the end, AFTER I figure out how these little guys work!!!! Thanks again fellas!

Re: Rochester 2GV Carb Question

If it still runs bad after the rebuild flyingfish carbs out of Florida is very reasonable. They sell Remans with a life time warranty.
I bought a Rochester 2GC from them and it ran great out of the box.Only thing i had to adjust was the idle mixture about 1/4th of a turn.
You may as well try the rebuild kit being you already have it but if the carb is missing parts you may be beating a dead horse so to speak....good luck with it.;)

Re: Rochester 2GV Carb Question

Thanks fellas!!!! I will give it my best shot. The question is still up in the air. I went to the big three auto parts stores today, and asked them if these well tubes were supposed to be in the carb, and the general consensus was that on some they were and some they werent. SO this carb POSSIBLY doesnt need them. Anyone have any rememberance of rebuilding their carb of this generation if it had the well tubes in it? That I believe was my original question. Thanks!

Re: Rochester 2GV Carb Question

I have rebuilt a lot of marine 2GC carbs and have never seen nor heard of the tubes not being there. I have seen a few of them corroded off due to water in the carb.
Mercruiser also warns against damaging those tubes when removing (it's in the OEM service manual if you want to look at it) as they are pressed into venturi cluster and not replaceable.
If those are missing, hard to say what else is wrong with that carb, but the 1351-7354 IS supposed to have them.

Re: Rochester 2GV Carb Question

Thank you for that Don. I agree with you, the OEM book DOES say to be careful when removing them, BUT it also says that they are plastic. Once again, I am not speaking about the two small metal tubes with holes in them that are connected to the venturi cluster, I am speaking of the "plastic" inserts that go into the wells that those two metal tubes that are connected to the venturi cluster slide into. The Hayes Rochester Repair manual as well as the rebuild kit that came from Sierra states that these exist. They are labeled on the Sierra instuction sheet as #39 Insert Main well. Please see picture attached. Thanks again. Anyone know where I can get these?

Re: Rochester 2GV Carb Question

That same kit is for about every 2bbl Rochester carb made. You also don't have the bowl vent (9,10,11) and a lot of other parts. Just a generic picture. and you will NEVER get all those parts in one carb.
While the gaskets will fit, you will have a lot of extra parts from that kit when done.
Use the information from the OEM service manual to rebuild a carb, not the instruction sheet in a generic carb kit.

Re: Rochester 2GV Carb Question

Gotcha, I am trying to find Mercruiser service Manual numero 4 for my motor serial number 6028915. This is the correct manual that I am supposed to be looking for correct? I did some cross referencing over different sites to come up with this, but just wanted to make sure. Thanks, again!

Re: Rochester 2GV Carb Question

Manual #4 is for your outdrive/trim/transom shield only, for your engine, you need manual #3.
