Rochester 2GC choke question

I just rebuilt my 2gc on a 1986 4.3L GM OMC stringer(Yes they did make a stringer that yr). Everything went well except when it comes to adjusting the choke. It says to rotate the cover clockwise and put the indicator to the marks on the housing. I did this, but it seems to turn the coil almost 3/4 of a revolution to get to the marks. This causes the choke plate to held closed with quite a bit of force.

I looked at adjusting some other automatic chokes, and they say the choke plates should be just lightly closed at 70 degrees. Mine is held firmly in place.

Is this model supposed to be held closed so tight, or is the coil spring going bad? If the coil is going bad, where could I find a new one? I looked on the internet and found nothing. The part #17063425

I hope this is how the carb is supposed to work, but if not, can I just forget about the alignment marks and turn the cover just enough to barley close the choke plate?

I have not installed the carb yet, so not sure if it works. Trying to get it right before I put it on because I store the boat 60miles away and only adjustments I can make are on the water because I have no access to hose there.

Thanks,
Scott

Re: Rochester 2GC choke question

When everything was new, setting the choke disc to a specific pointer position was probably correct 99% of the time. However, over time, the coil gets weak and things tighten up or loosen up so tension is no longer as it once was. So here is what I've found over many years: 1) NEVER attempt to adjust a choke on a warm engine -- always do it on a stone cold motor. 2) Rotate the disc so the choke plate just barely closes. Then gently touch the back side of the plate and do a little finger tap dance on it. It should slightly open with very little pressure. Ensure all linkages are operating freely. Go boating.

Re: Rochester 2GC choke question

just rebuilt mine as well. i have an omc 1985 i/o with the rochester 2 jet .if you bought a kit make sure they gave you the correct accelerator pump if its too small a pump it will stall and backfire under throttle make sure it squirts fuel with the float bowl full. also did you install the check balls there are two? now back to your question. just set the choke until it fully closes then go one or two index marks on the cap more because you can always readjust it on the boat if it comes off too early turn it towards richer. but if its too tight the motor might not want too idle and load up. with it set looser/leaner you can always put it in neutral and slightly rev the motor whilst warming up. good luck

Thanks, that's what I thought. I did install the 2 check balls and accelerator pump looked the same as the one that was on there, but i might open it back up and check that. Is it to small in diameter or to short in length? I used the sierra rebuild kit.
