I have a 1979 Ranger bass boat. I am putting the cap back on, what type of rivets should I use for this. Pop or Blind?

Do you know what kind of rivets were drilled out when the cap was removed? I would use the same type.

On my little tri-hull, they used a very large headed pop type rivet. But I don't know on your Ranger boat. Best to use what they used as GA_Boater stated. Some body will chime in with that answer for sure.

You could ask them for some. I know you can get gel coat repair kits with a perfect match in color to your boat after the sale, why wouldn't they either sell you some or tell you where they get theirs. A little PR goes a long way and the industry is mighty competetive.

The term pop comes from the sound a blind rivet makes when the mandrel breaks when using a rivet tool to set it so they are the same. No need for closed end blind rivets on the cap.

You'll need to know the length of the the rivet, diameter (3/16" is most common), flange size and the composition of the rivet is. ie: all aluminum, stainless or aluminum with steel mandrel would be my last choice.

Thank You all for your help! I have called Ranger and they are looking into it. I just want to use a rivet that will not leak and I did not know if there was a certain kinda or brand you would recommend.

So I could just purchase all aluminum Rivets at my hardware store? Just make just I place 3m 4200 on the rivets before I put them in?

If your hardware store carries the correct flange size, it may require large flange or domed or counter sunk there may not be enough room for the large flange and a regular size flange may be needed. I think we would have to see a photo to tell for sure.

Here's a pic that shows the variety of blind rivets.
