Does anyone know if I can use a standard type rivet gun to fasten areas around the bilge and carpet areas. Also do I need to use special rivets since these areas are not in water? The ones I removed were pretty heavey duty as to the type I usually use w/ my gun.

What kind of loads will they be subjected to? Pop rivets are nowhere near as strong as solid ones. If you're talking about trim pieces, that should be okay. If you're talking about something structural, they may not be strong enough.

Assuming the pieces being joined are aluminum, use aluminum rivets.

Oh, by the way, I thinks it's spelled, "reevits" around here.

What is the combined thickness of the 2 materials you'll be riveting together?

I used blind (pop) rivets to fasten down the 3/4" decking in my boat, it's been over a year now and no problems.

I did however use 1/4" diameter rivets that requires a heavy duty rivet setting tool, but you can set 3/16" diameter with the regular setting tool.

If the combined thickness of your 2 materials are 3/8" or less they may have used closed end blind rivets for extra strength, these are very strong rivets and drill out like a solid rivet. This guy uses closed end blind rivets in this vid:
