Re: Rivet boats
Hello, I'm in the trailer manufacturing business, and what you are looking for are buck rivets. First you need to know what you have. There are 3/16 and 1/4 -inch and depending on the style of head you have. The head type will determined what type of set you will use. There are two types of heads, Brazer and modified (modified Brazer heads). Brazer heads have the larger head than the modified. Find your local trailer manufacturer and see the parts man.... he will know just what you need. How you use these rivets will require two people. You'll need an air hammer. The set is concurve to fit over the head of the rivet, but flush with the skin. Now you must determined what length you need. You want the rivet to go through with about 1/4-inch sticking through. Ok, now for the other person: have a bucking bar(any heavy piece of steel will work). I have many sizes and the one I use most is a piece of 2-inch round stock about 4-inches. Place the air hammer with the set square on the head of the revit and apply pressure. Lightly pull the trigger, which will start the hammer process. The person with the bucking bar will hold it on the tag end of the rivet and will apply pressure.. then hammer till it looks like the rest. There are soft and hard rivets, (hard you will need to hit harder).I work for Wabash national corp., the world largest trailer manufacturer, with 32 location in the U.S. and 15 in Canda..... but any trailer manufacturer will do.... there's Strick, Trailmobile, Utility, Great Dane. As you drive down the road just look at a trailers and you will see the revits, and yes there strong, those trailers hold 50,000 lb. Hope I have helped you, and don' t think it's hard, it's not
