Riser Mounting - Factory bolts or replace with Studs?

Like the title says...

I'm replacing my exhaust Elbows (Risers, according to some parts manuals) and the factory units were secured using long bolts. Do I need to pop the $$$ for the stud style mounting kits available with some replacements, or are the bolts fine? Seems it would be more difficult to get the risers out of the rubber exhaust boot with the studs...

Re: Riser Mounting - Factory bolts or replace with Studs?

What engine are you working with? The risers are usually disconnected from the boots after the mounting bolts are removed. On Mercruiers the bolts from the risers to the manifolds are not extremely long, about 1.5". The bolts from the manifolds to the block are approximately 4.5" long. I've replaced those bolts only when the bolt heads are bad. I do use one extra long stud temporarily at one end of the manifold to help hold that end up while I screw in a bolt on the other end. I then screw in a bolt in the hole next to the stud. I remove the stud and continue with installing the other two bolts. Hope this helps. Hy
