Hi All

Just about ready to re-assemble my exhaust (new elbows). During water flow testing down the exhaust Y pipe I found that the right side idle relief port is blocked. This port did not discharge any water when running on muffs before this maintenance session. Have tried inputting high pressure garden hose in to the right side idle port but no water will flow in. Have tried to insert an optical inspection camera down the Y pipe RHS but can only go as far as the exhaust flapper (down near the bottom in my model a 1986 5.7 raw water cooled carby model). The condition of this flapper looks good. Just wanted to check if it is OK to put all back togethor with the RHS idle relief outlet port blocked? It seems the heated water from the RHS elbow can either go out the LHS relief port or even the prop centre anyway? I believe the only way to physically check this port for obstruction (rust flakes or old flapper remains) is to pull out the engine and remove the Y pipe? Not really possible for me to undertake at this stage.

If it is running at ok temp and that side doesn't get overly hot ye I think you are ok. Normally you don see even flow out of both idle relief ports anyways.

You may be able to see in side if you pull the drive and exhaust bellows. Biggest concern I would have is if you get a shutter logged down there it can vibrate and wear a hole through the Wye pipe, which will leak water into the boat

You sure that's where it's supposed to be? I haven't heard of any that aren't mounted at the top of the pipe.

If there is a flapper at the bottom of the Y pipe that, might be the whole problem!

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,..... I'm with these guys, ^^^....

The only y-pipe I've ever seen from Merc with the shutters down low is back in the '70s, there was a 3 piece y-pipe with low mount shutters,.....

My guess is, yer's burnt up, 'n fell down the pipe,.....

I dont believe the old flappers were stainless so you may be able to send a magnet down on a string and see if anything comes up or a telescoping magnet grabber.Charlie
