Most shops have "rigging manuals" supplied by engine
manufacturers. These things are a wealth of information,
but nearly impossible (as far as I know) to get your
hands on if you aren't part of the shop.

Anybody know how to get one (a Yamaha one, to be exact)?

THX

JHog

Re: Rigging Manual

Hi J Hog
Sorry I don't have a rigging manual for Yamaha. Have you tried begging your local dealer with tears in your eyes and a few bucks in your hand. Sometimes if your sincere, a good guy will come thru for you. Oh yes, be sure to swear not to tell.

Hmmm, a good thought. Or even better, maybe I'll send my wife -- experience has shown that a pretty blonde can facilitate some things very well.

;->

Re: Rigging Manual

Just call Yamaha. It worked for me. They even faxed me the detailed schematics...immediately and free. :D

Re: Rigging Manual

PLEEEAAZZZE -- tell me who you called. I've called Yamaha (America) three times, and they have staunchly refused to provide ANY technical information AT ALL. They tell me that they are not obligated to provide any technical support, and refer me to my local dealer.

I've even had the local dealers tell me that they don't have certain information, and then tell me that I have to contact Yamaha directly (an infinite loop).

Thanks for the feedback!!

JHog

Re: Rigging Manual

1-800-967-7926 or try faxing them at 714-761-7303 (this is their number at the top of the rigging specs that they send me).

Or...just tell me what dimensions you're looking for...I have those exact F115 specs in front of me right now, free.

I can't believe a Yamaha dealer wants to charge $$ for this! Nothing says a dealer has to mount the thing. And what good is it without rigging specs?

Re: Rigging Manual

Or if you can picture this....

Dimension A: Angle of outboard rotation when turned completely to one side = 35 degrees (outboard has a 70 degree rotation range from side to side).

Dimension B: Angle of outboard between a full down position (perpendicular to the ground) and tilted fully up = 68 degrees.

Dimension C: With the outboard in it’s maximum tilt (up) position, the distance from the upper and outer edge of boat transom (where the outboard’s bracket mounts) to the front of the hood = 21.8”.

Dimension D: Distance from cavitation plate to upper and outer edge of transom (where outboard bracket mounts) = 25.3” for 25” shaft, and 20.3” for 20” shaft.

Dimension E: Width of outboard from centerline to side = 9.7”. Total width of outboard would be 19.4”.

Dimension F: Width of outboard from centerline to side when fully turned in either direction = 15.3”.

Dimension G: Transom thickness at bracket = 3.2”

Dimension H: Distance from bottom of outboard mounting bracket to top of transom = 14.4”

Dimension I: Distance from bottom of outboard keel (when lowered and perpendicular to ground), to lowest part of outboard when tilted completely up = 33.7”

Dimension J: Distance from bottom of outboard keel (when lowered and perpendicular to ground) to outer and upper edge of boat transom (where outboard bracket will mount) = 41.6”

Dimension K: With engine lowered so it is perpendicular to ground, distance from outer and upper edge of boat transom to top of hood = 26.8”

Dimension L: With engine tilted fully up, distance from outer and upper edge of boat transom to highest point of hood = 34.6”

Dimension M: (Tiller model only) Distance from outer and upper edge of boat transom to end of tiller handle = 33.9”.

Dimension N: Distance from outer and upper edge of boat transom to rear of hood = 26.1”.

Dimension O: Distance from outer and upper edge of boat transom to front of outboard = 4.5”

Dimension P: Distance from outer and upper edge of boat transom to rear of lower unit cavitation plate = 24.9”

Dimension Q: Distance from prop shaft to cavitation plate = 3.2”.

Dimension R: Center-to-center distance for twin mounting = 26”.

All dimensions assume the boat's transom angle is 12 degrees.

Hope this helps. :)

Re: Rigging Manual

from the yamaha dealer-the guy asked for a complete rigging manual,NOT just the specs for his four stroke.and as he said, the rigging manuals are a WEALTH of information.shop manuals, rigging guides and special tools are NOT FREE from the manufacturers-they are charged directly to our parts accounts.as a multi line dealer,we spend thousands per year on these items and when a customer requests an item,i try to help as much as possible-had he said he only wanted the F115 specs i would have gladly provided those at no charge!

Re: Rigging Manual

bobq, please don't be offended. It's nice to have Yamaha dealers like yourself on this board. My point was more directed at JHog's inability to get help from his own dealer and Yamaha. And the chances of him getting information from this site free without having to pay a dealer are very high. That's the beauty here. It has always bothered me that outboard makers do not include rigging instructions in the motor's packaging. We often mount new outboards in the Alaskan Bush, and have no access to a dealer, or even a phone. IMO, the outboard is useless to the owner without proper rigging specs, especially if he is mounting the outboard himself. And then to want to charge a paying customer for this information seems unfair. I guess that's why Yamaha has always supplied it to me free.

Most people want rigging specs because they are mounting their own outboard, or retrofitting an outboard to a different boat's transom. The controls, gauges, and steering all come with their own instructions, so that really leaves only mounting dimensions. The expense of "shop manuals" and "special tools" really have nothing to do with a rigging guide, although I realize there may be some other information in the rigging guide that someone may want.

I guess it would be nice if we knew exactly what information JHog needs.
