edit: See later post re news update

Saw it again Sunday. A 26' center console coming in from the bay and into the harbor, running at a right good speed, jumps a series of 3 wakes from a freighter--maybe 3 foot rollers. The teenager sitting on the bow deck with his legs hanging over was bouncing around and hollering (too bad he wasn't straddling a stanchion; a good nut pounding would teach him). He (and the "captain" I use the term loosely) had no clue how close he was to disaster.
I hollered at him on 16 but no answer; another boat nearby saw him, too, and noted he didn't have an antenna. I also called it out to any LEO's in the area, to no avail. If I didn't have lines down I may have chased him down to educate him.

Now, I also saw three teenage girls on the lee side of a 34' sailboat, legs dangling and feet in the water, which in the summer time is fine. No meat grinder running behind the boat, and lower speed.

This past Sunday I seen a Pontoon cruising down the river. So gal on the front eh deck dangling her feet in the water. Told my wife, "I hope that the DNR is still around" (We just got spot checked from them 30 minutes before)

I see that one A LOT. People don't realize they are one slip away from very possible death... It would be safer sitting on the edge of a 100 story tall building with your feet dangling over.

I see it all the time on the Raritan. I saw one huge bowrider going WOT with a dude standing on the front gunwales bent over holding onto the railing like he was riding a horse at full speed. Boat was getting slammed by wakes since this was at a major channel intersection with lots of boats in the area, plus a rough chop to begin with. If that guy lost his grip or his footing he was guaranteed to die. Unfortunately, Stupid can be wealthy enough to fund their stupidity.

only time I allow a person on the bow deck when we're under way is when we're in the small bay where the dock is (super protected smooth water) and running at idle ....and NO they cant dangle thier feet! sit in the middle....SORRY my boat my rules! lol

the Darwin theory will catch up eventually for the dodo heads everyone mentioned....

used to have a '67 Arkansas Traveler. Also used to have a G/F that loved to sunbathe on the fore-deck while I fished.

It's no place to be while underway. The girl in the above post, on the pontoon............imagine if they came across a log or a branch just under the surface..............jeez, gives me chills.

Coast Guard to focus on 'bow riding'

Through September, Coast Guard crews will focus on educating boat owners about the dangers of allowing passengers to ride on a vessel's bow.

In 2008, 13 of the 65 boating fatalities in the Coast Guard?s 5th District were attributed to "bow riding," a news release says.

The practice is unsafe, the agency says, because a rider who falls into the water can be hit by a propeller or suffer other injuries.

?You wouldn?t allow your kids to sit of the hood of your car, so why would you allow them to sit on the bow of your boat?? Rear Adm. Dean Lee, 5th District commander said in the release.

The agency will watch for bow riding on the water and educate the public about safe boating with public service announcements.

The Coast Guard?s 5th District stretches from North Carolina to mid-New Jersey.

I think people think boats have bowrails for the purpose of bowriding, and that's why they do it.

I for one am glad they'll be focusing on this. When any single behavior accounts for 20% of the fatalities, I think they waited too long.

If we could just get them to outlaw boating, there wouldn't have been any of those fatalities!

I put a bow rail on the hood of my car just for the purpose of letting the kids ride up there.

I think they do it, because they are stupid and thats natures way of removing them from the gene pool! A couple weeks ago, I was on the river, its a very small river when the water is down, so I go very slow in my 14' jon boat with my 9.9ob. I motor up and then drift and fish on the way back down. I go slow, BECAUSE the water can change from 4' deep to 4" deep with ZERO warning, there are boulders, gravel bars and logs EVERYWHERE. So I am drifting down and a couple kayakers chat with me as they are paddling up upstream, they get just past me and two teenage kids in another 14' jon boat with a 10hp motor fly past me at WOT, since they were only about 20' away from me, that was rude enough, BUT the guy on the bow, was sitting on top of the bow seat in a regular four legged kitchen type chair, with his toes hanging over the front of the boat!!!!:eek:It didn't take a fortune teller to figure out what was going to happen, they got just far enough around the bend that I couldn't see them, but the kayakers yelled,"OH NO, SUICIDE"! Fortunatly the boat slammed to a stop, so the moron on the bow, only got launch velocity and not prop-erly blended.

Re: Riding on the bow--don't these people think? NEWS UPDATE

Not many closed bows here on our inland lakes but I did see it two weekends back. Two gals on the bow of an old Four Winns Liberator while pulling a wake boarder on a busy day. They were at the sand bar and were drinking for several hours before they started boarding. I am with 45Auto on his views of outlawing everything and over reaching. What gets me is the lack of common sense. Sometimes I wonder if people can think one step ahead.

The problem with that is when stupid parents take out their innocent kids who aren't experienced enough to know any better. I guess something could be said for not carrying on the stupid gene, but still...
