I got ahead of myself!!!!! Had water on lower lower plug and diagnosed to be blown exhaust gasket. Started to remove powerhead and had broken ignition wires before marking. Repaired exhaust situation and now have a rewire situation.

Wires are as followes:

From flywheel Group one: Stator Three Gray Female connector marked #1
Orange female connector no #
Black Ground
From flywheel two wires : both red female connectors
Coils have both have black leads with male connectors and the kill switch has a orange lead with a male connector and a gray lead with a male connector. Thanks for your help John

Laddies, My engine doesn't have a switch box. I had looked a several diagrams with boxes but was unable to convert one to suit my motor. I am unsure if my engine has a switch box under the fly wheel so I may have to pull the wheel. I appreciate the help. I have tried to rewire and get back fire which is severe timing problems or trigger pulling at wrong times so to speak.

Here are the #s 653 S 07920 also 653-07066-653-10265
I looked these up and it looked to be a 1976. Could be wrong because of the age. Hope this helps. These #s are very plain because the motor is in pretty good shape. Thanks John

Re: Rewire Ignition system: 20 HP Mariner 1976

the diagram looks like my 76 and my 78 20hp merc 200 blue stripes, except that my 78 has the 2 wires from stator going into a rectifier. from other side of rectifier it is one wire to charge battery..... don't know that that is any help, picturs won't do much good now from mine, as the wire colors on mine are all different since i had to rewire the harness all the way back to the plug.
course the 76 lost alot of parts to the 78..... but the 78 is really nice now.
is yours pull start or electric start?

if you need i can chase wires on my engine to track them down for you and tell you where they are, then tell you what color they should be according to the diagram. not sure that that is much help.

Sean, I have thought the two red wires might be charge wires even thought the motor is now a pull start motor now. This would make my delima much easier. I have layed out the wiring on paper component wise with male and female versus color and think I have the wiring down. I am on a trip presently and can't rewire the engine but I have new hope thanks the you guys on the net. Don't chase any wires but thanks and I will post what I find. Tnx John

I rewired the motor as I had drew it out and left the two red wires out of the circuit and it fired right up. It has never been an electric motor. No water on the spark plug, so mission accomplished. Thanks 4 U R help. John
