Can anyone supply me with the micometer diameter dimensions of a Merc alignment tool? Also total length, length of insertion tip and length of steps. Lengths do not need to be done with a micrometer.

My friend is using a homemade wood tool that he borrowed from his Brother and is not happy with the results. He wants to make one which he can do for nada plus he won't have to wait for shipping.

Thanks in advance.

No wonder he can't get it aligned. They are around 2 feet long, or what ever fits in his tool box.

Don, I seem to remember there was a change to alignment tools for newer drives. I've seen the drawing where you could change your old one to the newer one. Would this tool you specified above be the one I need with my drive? Drive specs are in my sig. Thanks.

The above dimensions works on all OMC, Volvo, and Mercruiser drives up to 2006....... So far.

Re: REVISITING-Merc alignment tool dimensions?

My friend sent this message regarding the dimensions on the above mentioned diagram.

"I think someone has bogus info on this tool, the end is correct 1.010 but the second step is about .225 off too small. This would swim in the bearing, should be about 1.375 not 1.150. are we aligning the right things? What does the 1.150 dia. fit? I went over to Bill's yesterday and the noise he is hearing is a bad bearing, I don't think it is from miss-alignment. Sounds like a rough spot in the bearing, we used his stethoscope to find the noise."

This is for an 898 circa 1978. Also it appears that this tool does not engage the full depth of the coupler. It seems to be about 4" deep. Is that ok.

The 3rd step with no DEM is the 1.375 the rest of the tool

I forget whet the second step is for BUT i made my tool to that drawing and it works fine

Re: REVISITING-Merc alignment tool dimensions?

Tommays, are you saying that it is the second step at 1.150" that goes into the splined coupler? It is odd that Don's diagram does not show the 1.375 dimension of the largest step.

Maybe the first step (1.010") is not used on the Merc drive but is for one of the other drives. If so then the tool does not make contact with the full depth of the splines in the Merc coupler.

The 1.010 is what goes in the coupler

The drawing is a littel funny because it was supplyed buy merc for shops to modify there old tools to work with a change that was made to the coupler at some point

Gotcha on all counts Tommays. Can we say with a certainty that the unmeasured 3rd step dimension is, in fact, 1.375"?

I had mine made out of 1.375" round stock so I guess the 3rd step is 1.375".

Yes Boom 1.375 is the correct dimension.

I just measured my bar and it is 1.375 for 3.75" in length.I also changed the picture. I've been using that picture for 2 years and no one ever noticed the missing dimentions. Since I don't build them I never noticed it either.

Re: REVISITING-Merc alignment tool dimensions?

Thanks all. Have copied Don's revised diagram for purposes of building the MULTI purpose tool. In the meanstwhile, I borrowed a tool from the local OMC/merc :p guru.

Needless to say, it showed an entirely different picture from the WOOD tool.:^ We got a perfect two finger insertion around about 3/4's of the dial and the other quarter was only slightly higher effort.

At the same time we checked out the gimbal bearing and it was as smooth as a baby's behind.

On my way to being a multi-drive expert,
Sincerely Yours
