I have A new lower unit for my 1978 Johnson 70hp but the controls are reversed.Forward makes it go in revers and reverse goes forward. It goes really slow moving forward but in reverse it's got tons of power. The motor worked fine with the old lower unit just as it should. This one is from A 65hp but other than that it looks just like it.Just not sure where to start to figure this one out.I know almost nothing about outboards. Thanks in advance,I'm in aw with the knowledge that is on here. You guys are rockstars!

Re: reversed lower unit

Sounds like you have the wrong L/U on it. They looked the same but were different internally as far as shifting goes. One had an oil pump assist and the other was straight mechanical. Shift rods went in different directions to get in proper gears. Did you change props by any chance?

Re: reversed lower unit

That will make for a lot more probs due to the way the the bearings are set up in the G/C. You can look for an older mtr and get the P/H shift linkage off of it and convert it to yours.
