Reverse won't Engage

1983 Mariner 150hp, will not engage into reverse. It makes the grinding noise like normal but will not engage. Is there a adjustment to the linkage?

At the point the shift cable attach's to the engine there is a trunnion turn it to push the cable to the rear

It sounds like the shift arm isn't fully going into gear and needs adjusting. Had that problem with my Johnson, but who knows. Try disabling the cable end, and move it with your hand. if it clicks in and turns you have one simple fix, if not, resort to swearing.
