reverse rotating 350smercruiser vortec engine.

i have pre vortec 350 mercruisers 1990,s changeing to new 4 bbl vortec,s.ads all say you just need to change intake and go to electric fuel pump. now i hear i allso need a reverse distributer on the right hand engine. could someone please help me out and let me know if there is any thing else i need to know? they will be hooked to v drives. ive been reading this forum for a few years, you guys are great,this is my first post ,hope i did it right thanks.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... Are you Sure 1 of those motors is righthanded,..??

I'd sooner think the reverse rotation happens in the transmission, 'n Not the motors...

Btw,... There's No such thing as a reverse rotation distributer,...
Only the crankshaft turns backwards....

thanks for the cme back bond o bennreading your posts for years you and don are the best. yes there long blocks,and i already paid to have one reversed cam and rear seal. just hate supprises and allready got one on the distrib. im paying for a reverse delco was told i could buy a reverse gear but dist.will burn up .thanks

Bond-o, don't they require a gear cut the opposite direction? Just asking because I am not 100% sure. Never had one apart.

Every single righthanded Chevy I've ever seen, ONLY the crankshaft turns backwards...
The timing chain is swapped to timing Gears, which reverses the cam to Standard rotation....

The crank seals are different...
The cam is different, because of the firing order, Not it's rotation....

The cam shaft and distributor are different in a reversed engine.
Edit: The starter is opposite rotation too.

V drives 'normally' have one run in reverse, the prop is left or right, engines are 'usually' the same rotation.
Straight inboards run opposing rotation.

swapping over from the older pre vortec. from what ive been told the reverse dist is diffrent because the gear on the roller cam is diffrent from aflat tappet cam. as far as i know everthing should interchange,im really supprised i could not findmore info on this forum thats why im so concerned. iall ready paid for these engines and idont want any supprises when i do the swap. thanks

Camshaft on the reverses rotation is different due to firing order, but still turns the same direction as the std. rotation engine.
Distributors are the same for Mercruiser. Different firing order on the cap, but same distributor and gear on the end of the shaft.
The engine circulation pump, and alternator don't care which way they turn. Starter turns the crankshaft and is rev. rotation because the crankshaft is.
Roller lifter engines were not used in reverse rotation engines by Mercruiser.

thanks for the info don, i dont know if i got stiffed or what. paid 749.00 extra for a reverse right hand 350 vortec and 389.00 for a right hand dist. woe is me.

hi don, just google michigan motorz,it will show marine engine parts sales and service shipping... then below you will see new base gm engines. scroll down to 5.7l 350ci base marine engine 1996 to 2011 replacement. item #5700 base v.click on engine picture and it will discribe opposite rotation available for an additional 750.00 and r r distributer kit highly recommended. hope this helps. maby the confusion is i keep saying mercruiser when i should be saying gm base. thanks

hi don, talked to mmotors i def. have a reverse with a roller cam. claim the roller gear is than the flat tappet cam thats why the reverse dist. dose any of this sound right? thanks.

that sounds like teck jargon sales pitch to me bubba .....kinda like saying the electro magnetic field created by the distributor turning in reverse needs a flux capasitor to cancel out the field

I'm curious.
Did you take out a reversed engine?

"Normally" the reversing is done on the V drive (reverse and forward are the same ratio) and opposing props.
Look on top of the V drive, there is embossed on the housing "Counter rotation" arrow where the the shifter linkage bolts to.

Too late to back out of the engine now, but might save some aggravation later!

, i dont type i peck an the brain is going faster than the finger,so i tend to misspell and leave out words.sorry.what i ment was i definitly have a right hand turning engine with a roller cam. michigan motors claims that only on the vortec with the roller cam the distributer gear is different , so you have to use a reverse rotating distributer.thanks for any input.

im useing the alt pumps off my original right turning pre vortec,so thats not an issue. the things i need to know are since the vortec intake manifolds are diffrent is there a spot for the choke heat spring to q jet carb? ordo i have to get electric chokes?do they sell kits?what about wireing harneses? electrictronic s? engines are in the mail so i cant compare.they make it sound so easy,and then they throw in the unexpeced,like this reverse distributer thing.just trying to get my ducks in order. thanks again for your input,patiance,and sence of humer.

yep my originals are stamped l and r onthe serial #,s ive allso had to buy a right turning starter.these are 1990 fwc 350,s that i squeesed 2200 hours out of.just starting to push a little oil out the dipsticks at over 3000 rpm s outher than that they look and run like new.they dont owe me anything so i thought id refresh with up grades.350 vortec,s.thanks for the come back .any input is appreciated.
