hi guys, back again ,looking to find what to use for a distributer on a right tuning 350 vortec. i have a mallory (mal 9-26307) just wondering what other people are useing? thanks for any input.

didnt think there was a reverse rotation Vortec engine. Tell us how you determind the rotation?

hello bt doctur,this is my 3rd attempt to reply,Ireall hate this computer! yes Ihave a reverse 350 vortec, ($750.00 extra) check michigan motorz web site.they change the cam,seals, and put gears in instead of a timeing chain. only on the reverse vortec,s do you need a reverse distributer (mal9-26307 for carburated engines mal9-26701 for fuel injected engines. standard head 350,s both left and rightengines the dist,s turn the same way. not so on the vortec because of the cam gear. I know some people have used a right reverse gear on the thunder bolt dist. but I understand they burn up after a while. some on else out there must have the same issue, Icant be the only one ,or am I stuck with the dreaded mallory? thanks for any help.

Ayuh,... That right there, keeps the cam rotating in it's Original Direction...

Only the crankshaft turns the opposite way...

your right bond o,except the cam they put in the dist gear turns opposit,only on the vortec. standard head 350,s are diffrent.confusing I know. phil at michigan can explain it a lot better than i can. thanks for the comeback, but i still dont know if im stuck with the horrid mallory, the only true reverse distributer I can find. i cant be the only one out there thats haveing this problem. engines are iall changed over and back in the boat. when every thing is done Ill give a run down on changeing over from standard 350s to vortec 350s not quite as easy as they emply for an amature. sorry thats phil at michigan motorz.com,brain going faster than the pecking finger again

cam turns the same way, not opposite. Thats what the gear drive is for.Like Bondo says, only the crank is opposite.

hello again, your right.its the gear on the cam thats diffrent.still hopeing for distributer info;have 800.00 in distributers an not happy about it.1delco est 1reverse mallory, and i mistake,mallory.

What exactly is your problem, you only asked what others were using on a rev. rot. vortec, not that you were having problems.

sorry don,the question was and is ,what else can I use for a distributer,besides the mallory? other than that there is no problem,just dont like mallory.

Did your motor come with a roller cam? Those use a harden gear for the distributor and can wear out Dizzy'z drive gear. All chevy's Dizzy turn the same direction, due to the oil pump drive, if dizzy turned in the opposite direction, then oil pressure would be an issue. You can use any dizzy that has a hardened gear. Is the engine you got using an ECU for ignition (carb or fuel injected)ECU engines also are timed different, the timing is done from a crank sensor, and the dizzy sets the cam timing. Carb engines will use a different distributer and there is not many alternates to Mallory.

So tell us which engine you have, if its carbed "Vortec" then almost any dizzy will work, ECU (fuel injected) engines you will need to use the correct dizzy. My understanding of the Vortec Crab style dizzy, the auto versions are very close to the marine version, all are non vented. here is a picture of a auto version that is non vented http://info.rockauto.com/getimage/g...eurl=http://info.rockauto.com/United/9362.jpg

Hi paw2000, yes I do have a roller can. Right now there is no problem, but since Don asked, maybe I can save someone some aggrevation. I have 1990 3270 cruisers inc., I had two 350 260 hp carborated engines with V drives. Engines started pushing oil out the dip sticks after 3200 rpms (crank case pressure). Engines had 2300 hrs. so time to rebuild or replace them. Decided to upgrade to the 350 Vortex, the problem started when the engine supplier sold me a mallory 9-26701 distributor for the rt hand engine and the delco est distributor for the left hand engine, here's the problem, I talked to Mallory's technician, he says that distributor is for a fuel injected engine and cannot be used on a carborated engine, he's correct because the engine does not have an ecm, the timing goes all over the place, so to correct the problem I had to buy a 9-26307 the only true reverse distributor for a Vortek. The Delco est seems to be fine on left hand engine, so my problem is cured. Someone else might run across this. Sorry this is so rambling, but it's Saturday and I have time on my hands.

Why don't you just put a Delco EST in the RH engine?

I don't know what they are using for a cam, Mercs RH engines all use the same distributor and gear. Compare the gears from the Mallory to the EST. They could be the same.

hi don thanks for the advice I will check the gears,this has been makeing me mental, ive spent a lot of money on this project and today to play it on the safe side i ordered the left hand mallory #mal9-26306lh to macth the mal9-26307rh,this solves all problems ,one which was I didnt want two diffrent distributers ,a pain to buy two diffrent tune up parts . don, im not a mechanic and dont understand what im being told half the time so i depend on people like you, thanks by the way.Iknow the cam they installed is a hydraulic special #10hr00066,with a cast iron distributor drive. fireing order12756348 ,that makes it a left hand rotation cam. Ive got all my info from michagan motors, and mallorys in house tech expert (thad at 216 658 6438 ext 436) AM I getting a con job? just edited ,that would be a crane cam.,sorry for the rambeling,

A big part of your problem is the wording you use to describe parts. It is confusing people that have not worked on a setup like yours.

Your have a cam for a reverse turn or right hand engine. The cam is not a reverse turn and does not turn backwards.
Same with the distributor it is set up for a reverse turn or right hand engine But it does turn the same way.

ps 1 I really think the distributors are the same.
ps2 easy way to remember your firing orders just move the first number to the last place and read it backwards that changes standard to reverse.

thanks lyle, believe me,I confuse myself, I am curious,new mallorys will be here this week,ILL pull the other two and match the gears. will let every one know what i find.

V drive can really screw you up. If the drive reverses the output the reverse engine goes on the same side as a regular setup. Then you get to the starters.. now I am lost so I will stop posting.

tell me about it,my reverse engine is the port.its really the reverse vortec thing, if it was the standard head right 260hp there would be no issues.ive been putting part numbers etc,hoping people would look them up and maby unerstand since i cant seem to get
my point across lol.all areally wanted to know if there is an alternative to the mallorys ,because i just dont like them. all in all i enjoy the people and their posts on this forum,wish i could explain things better,but like i said before im not a mechanic . thanks every one for your patience.
