reverse problem

I have a 65hp Mercury not sure of age it says 6500 with blue stripes.
motor runs well drives well, my problem is when I try to reverse I have the throtle almost wide open and the boat will barely move.There seems to be a rachitting sound that comes from the motor? Can you help.
