I just bought this boat with a 1985 black max XR2.Because of the price I bought the boat I did not water test it.With muffs on the motor went in forward and reverse and still does. But when put in the lake the reverse jumps.I adjusted the linkage until forward no longer worked and it still jumped in reverse. After I bought the boat before even putting it in the lake I replaced the impeller and the LU oil.Outy of water when the lever is in forward the propeller will racket one way and have pressure on it the other way.I n neutral the propellar spins freely. With the lever in reverse position, the propeller will ratchet one way and have pressure the other way.I had no filings on the LU Drain plug.Could I have maybe not have put the shift linkage back properly even though it seems to be in the right position? Thanks in advance for all help.I am hoping I don't have a bad reverse gear??????

I dont have the model diagram for that one but if its got a carrier bearing retaining nut (which i think it will) if thats not done up to spec that will happen.
Its the big nut behind the prop inside the LU.
They need a ridiculous amount of torque like something over 180ft pounds. You could pull the prop and see if your models got one of them and if so check its tight/not cracked with a small coldchisel and a rubber mallet or something along those lines but being careful not to break it

Not sure as i cant see a diagram for it unfortunately, but often there is a little back cam that sits on top of the shift shaft above the LU that will actuate a shaft in the midhousing by pushing it up to lock it in reverse. but im not sure if thats the case on your one..........

.Also do you know what keeps my motor from raising up when I put it in reverse????Thanks again.
If you mean its raising while underway you have Tilt n trim problem(hydraulic).

Your cam is probably on the shiftshaft incorrectly positioned
