Hello, I am new here so thank you for any help you can give. I bought a 1969 Model 40 4 HP #2501060 single cylinder outboard with reverse. It is missing all of the parts for the lever that releases or locks in the reverse lock. I found most of what I need to put it back together on Ebay. But I don't see how it works, mainly because it is missing. This is an early one that the lift rod attaches right to the lever. Not to another cam on the lever shaft. How will I get to the lever to move it? It doesn't look like it is out in the open. A picture of what it looks like would be very helpful. Thanks much !! Mark

First thing :welcome: to iboats. Great to have you aboard...

Now unto your problem and question. I'm not sure how your engine will work with the reverse lock system. But you can buy a manufacturers' specific shop manual that will explain how it works and probably has step by step instructions about it as well. I find factory shop manuals to be the absolute best source for such questions and pictured explanations. It also has everything you would even want to know about your engine published is their shop manuals. So I suggest you buy such a manual and read to see how it works... JMHO!

Hello and thanks for the reply to my post. I did purchase a "Factory" repair manual that was a download online and it did not cover any of the information I need in it. Does anyone know where I can order a manufactures' specific shop manual for this 1969 model ? Thank you for any help you can give, I have hunted all over the internet and can't find one anywhere. Thanks again.

This is an update on the question and information listed in the above postings. I found a Mercury "Factory" service manual for this outboard on Ebay and bought it. Sad to say there was no information about the reverse lock anywhere in the manual. I found a very good exploded parts diagram for the exact serial number outboard I have and it was very helpful. But wouldn't you know it there were 3 different sets of reverse lock parts available in 1969 on the model 40. It took some doing but thank God with some trial and error it all worked out and I now have a working reverse lock working on my lower unit.
