When I hold the shift lock against its spring I can shift easily from forward to neutral otherwise it binds. Hondon was right. There doesn't appear to be much to adjust. Does the lower unit have to come off to troubleshoot this further?

I'd appreciate any help, I'm stumped.

I don't know what yr the motor is, but it sounds like your reverse lock cam needs to be replaced.Drop the LU and there it is, a cam on the shift shaft. It gets groved and doesn't allow for smooth shifting. Replace it with a metal one.
...have fun...corm

Corm, thanks for your suggestion. Is the metal cam an option or the one that my parts place will normally offer? The motor is an 87 sn ob112292 Thanks, mike

It is a std parts upgrade from the factory.
It is all you can buy,unless a dealer has some old stock. It is silver not black plastic. Your motor is clase to the factory upgraded part. Would have to look it up to see which you have in there now.

------------------
...have fun...corm

cubic inches = power
power = speed
speed = FUN

Email me if you need to.
