Do mercury outboards slip in reverse after
a certain speed to keep from swamping the
boat or do I have a problem.

Why? Did you swamp your boat?? If so...I'd say you have a BIG problem.

No, Mercs do not have such a feature. I'd need a bit more info to determine what's going on, but often times "slip" in reverse is nothing more than cavitation caused by the exhaust.

Walt

Re: reverse gear on 73 mercury

Walt,
You helped me the other week on this motor(not cutting off). When I got this motor it was not firing, which I fixed. The foot was supposed to be rebuilt.I know the person well
that I got the motor from and he had carried
it to a guy aand had all new parts for the foot, including the water pump, but I think the guy ripped us all off. When the boat is going
down the lake it seems to slip and when you put it reverse it is very slow. When you have hooked up to hose pipe,it clicks in reverse.Do you think we got ripped off by the repair man

Re: reverse gear on 73 mercury

Are you certain the shift linkage is properly adjusted? If so, then try taking the engine back to the guy who did the repair. See if he's willing to help solve the problem. That's the first approach I'd take... If the guy is a cull, then you perhaps your friend will share or cover the expense to get it fixed right. Perhaps someone in here could explain what might be the problem with your lower unit by what you are describing...

Good luck!

Walt

Also...find out exactly what repairs this guy made (or allegedly made) to the lower unit... Knowing that might help determine what he may have screwed up...

Walt

Walt,
Thanks for the help.I got the foot apart and all the gears are new.The guy who worked
on it had put it together wrong at the shifter shaft,I hope this fixes the problem.
Once again thanks for the help
Everett

Hey great...let's hope it's something so easily repaired.

The clicking you described when in reverse made me wonder if the gears weren't fully engaged. I don't know if any damage could occur from that, but let's hope not.

Keep us posted...

Walt
