How do I check if my rev counter RPM is the same as Engine RPM ?

I have the scan tool but never used it,so the scan tool will actually tell me what the RPM is

Ayuh,.... Donno if yer scan tool does rpms or not, but the Idea is to cross-check with another tachometer that's known to be Right,...

Ayuh,... Shop tachs read from the coil, just like the boat's tach,...

Yer just cross checkin' it's accuracy,...

Yes, the scan tool gives rpm.

With power off should the rev counter be at zero ???

Soome do & some don't. It makes no difference what it reads with the engine off -- you know the RPM is Zero. You are interested in it's accuracy with the engine running! Check it at 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 and 4500 -- ON THE WATER OVER 2000 RPM, NOT IN NEUTRAL.
