Retrofitting a kill switch on a 1963 mercury 500

Im working on a full engine+boat restoration and the idea of a kill switch was mentioned to me. These old engines never had kill switches or anything of the sort. Given that all of the work on the boat and engine are going to be from my own amateur hands, I would feel more comfortable with a kill switch lanyard on the engine. Just a little $15 insurance if something does go wrong. Does anyone know the right way to wire one up?

As far as specs go, Ill be using a 1963 mercury 500 with a mercontrol remote. Im pretty sure the remote is from the late 60's (white, blocky, mercontrol printed on the side). The ignition system on the engine uses points. I would prefer to wire it into the remote rather than splice into the harness or engine if possible.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Click image for larger version Name:	26A.jpg Views:	1 Size:	138.0 KB ID:	10817030 I don't know how well you know your wiring from you controls & engine, but if your are familiar with the meaning/purpose of the wiring.
Then install your kill-switch near dash/side of boat and run the two wires to engine put the two wires between the same terminal that your mercury-switch is hooked to & the other wire to ground. if not sure look inside your control-box to see what wire is the one of the key-switch.

Easy....just install a kill switch(normally open) on side of boat. Run your 2 wire from it to control box and install one wire on the black and other wire on the white or salmon depending on box.

I mentioned the hook-up into the control-box & Fazbullet explained also on how.
However... usually the wiring in the box are in bad shape (unless completely replaced)
to save yourself from extra unnecessary work; hook up as per post #2
