Restoring an old Renken, couple questions?

I'm in the middle of restoring an 83 19ft Renken with a Volvo Penta 230a/270 I/O. I've already rebuilt the carb, soaked it in acid and replaced the points/condensor. The motor cranks fine, and has clean, water-free oil in it. The cylinder head is clean and free of any metal shavings, but the belt is torn and stretched, so I'm fairly certain all I need to do is replace the toothed belt that runs the timing and it will run. I'm an automotive mechanic by trade but know little about boats, so I have a few questions I'm hoping I can get answered here.

1. I have a workshop manual for my engine and outdrive, but what it doesnt tell me is how to set the timing. When I got the boat the distributor was out of it, so I need to know what position to set the Cam pulley, and at what position to set the distributor.

2. Theres a marina about 30 minutes from me that sells Penta parts, but are there any websites that might have the parts cheaper?

3. "Dwell" is the rotation of the distributor channel inside the housing, correct? If so, What position should I put it in when I first crank it over?

Thanks,

Nick

the timing belt lines those pulleys up. Your a mechanic by trade? Thats good cause there's a lot of maintenance on these old boats.

Fix the timing belt first. Maybe you can find a manual for your engine in one of the threads. 83 didn't use the engine number 230a, they used AQ #'s.

You can buy parts here on Iboats.

The dwell is adjusted by the point gap. Never worked on this old school stuff??

Well, my engine experience is fairly limited... and sadly no, my old school engine experience is limited to tuning carbs and basically 60/70's Mustangs...

It's definatly a 230a, the plate on the carb says Volvo Penta 230A right on it, i looked it up and your right, the years don't match, but im thinking maybe somebody dropped the 230 into it.

I know the belt works the pulleys, but don't i have to set the pulleys in a certian position before installing the belt?

I searched high and low and the workshop manual I have is the only thing I can find on my engine, but i guess it wasn't written for this kind of repair because it says nothing about timing, just electrical, fuel and top end specs.

The belts and pulleys have makings on them, but you need the manual. Search AQ131 in the forums. Go through a couple and you'll run across a link from the one and only Don S.:)
