Hey guys, as the title saysmim working on a 196 Johnson. I'm extremely rookie. I'm still waiting on the fuel line from a buddy so I haven't tried to start it yet but I did pop off the cover and took a look. First thing. Checked were the spark plugs. They were shot. I picked up a new pair from auto zone for 5 bucks. Next I wanna check out the carb and clean that out, how the hell do I do that? Haha. I'm an 18 year old kid with little to no experience with marine engines so any little bit helps. Thanks

You should do a compression test on the motor before you spend any $$$ on. Post back with the results.

Ok I did some reading Ill run a compression test but I need to get the fuel line first so in the mean time what else should I do or does this take priority?

Hi there K....and welcome to iboats!

You're an old-timer compared to a lot of the guys here. I started working on engines when I was 9 :)

You can do a compression test and a spark test at the same time. Start by removing both plugs and then push a bolt into the rubber boot so it sticks out a little.

Then; have a friend pull the engine over and you hold the boot so the bolt is about 1/4" from the block (clean metal).

You should get a visible spark.....kinda blue and bright.

Then; with both bolts touching ground (the engine block) ....do the compression test. Pull the engine over one cylinder at a time several pulls until the gauge stops rising.

Tell us the results. This is fun...and we will help you. Don't hesitate to ask questions.

Chuck

Here's a link that will help with the carb. Others will post other links for you too....

i never get a friend to pull the engine over while I hold the boot!!!!!!! ( learned that lesson 30 years ago. lol) Get your friend to hold the boot while you pull the cord.....and ask the friend about any pacemaker he/she may have installed before doing so.

I learned that lesson today! I had my brother pull it over while I held it...That was a mistake haha! I am doing the same thing to a 1965 evinrude 9.5 hp. I got a semi-early start at 13. I got my first project motor on Sunday. Good luck!

Ok "K"....

Here's a question for you. I notice from another one of your posts that you've had experience with Lawnmower engines.

That Johnson outboard is a 2-stroke engine and it get's it's lubrication from mixing oil into the gas.

So; the Question:

Do you know the correct type of oil and the ratio with which it needs to be mixed into the gasoline?

Don't try starting that engine if you don't know the answer.....

Haha ya thanks I'm not that rookie. My dad and a friend got it started today with some engine starter but still the original spark plugs so that's a good sign. Now I'm just looking for a new prop and some decals so I can get this in the water haha

well ...you should explain to your dad and his friend that starting fluid is a big no-no for two-stroke engines!! it has no lubrication in it and will cause engine damage !
