I have a 84 50hp 4cyl 2stroke mercury outboard. I'm pretty new to working on boat motors when I'm at home it starts with no problem even if it sits for a couple months. I take it out to the lake and it starts up with no problem and runs great, I'll turn it off to fish for awhile say an hour or more then when I go to restart it has a hard time starting but after it does it runs great and if I shut it off and try to restart again in just a short period of time it starts with a bump of the key. Only happens on the water after siting for awhile...... Anyone else have this problem or may be able to help me?

Re: restarting after motor sits for acouple hours

welcome.
Your motor sounds like a typical 2 stroke. They start well when they are cold and start well when they are warm but they can be a pain when there not warm or cold. Back in the old days you had to learn how to start a car and find out what it likes and your motor may be the same way. If you can get it to start in under a minute (2-3 trys) I wouldn't worry to much about it.

P.s you know the basics of push key to choke and lifting fast idle lever ? ( I hate to ask but as most people start with no instructions some people do not know )

When a motor is hot and you turn it off sometimes the gas that is in the fuel bowls percolates out of the carburetors into the intake manifold/crankcase over the time you are sitting. You crank the engine and it refills the fuel bowls and clears the overly rich mixture out of the crankcase. When the mixture is right, it fires up again..

Are you raising the motor while you sit?
Try pumpin the primer bulb maybe 5 times... I thought it was vaporization but turns out it wasn't..
