My FIL fried his nice 2000 50 horse 3 cylinder ELPTO and yours truly has been elected to undo the damage.
Anyway,I split the block today and to my surprise the inner sleeve of the top cylinder had been pulled down by the overheated piston for about a third of an inch where it set up the engine by not allowing the crankshaft to pass. What probably happened is that somehow a piston ring popped into a small space that was at the end of the sleeve and then pulled it out.
In short it needs a new sleeve.
what sort of cost should I count on if one cylinder is resleeved and the other two are just honed?
I understand that I will also have to replace the lightly scored pistons in the other cylinders.
Please, all you merc gurus, give me a ballpark estimate, so I can make a decision on whether to rebuild or just buy another block.
As always, your ideas and comments are highly appreciated
