What is the function of the resistance wire in the ignition system of my Mercruiser? I assume it fuses some function. Do resistance wires wear, or get tired?

Re: resistance wire

It reduces the voltage to the coil, thats it.
Doesnt wear, doesnt get tired, they break if kinked to often.

Re: resistance wire

It lowers the ignition running voltage so the points don't get burned.

Not exactly...the main purpose it to protect the coil, the coil would produce too much high voltage at low rpm and heat up.
