Have a 98 force 120hp and want to stick with a 17 pitch. Will ALL 17p 13 1/4 diameter 15 spline prop work for this motor? <---headache

No, not just any prop will fit but---Assuming you still have a 4 inch gearcase, any small hub Mercury prop will fit. Vortex props will fit. Etc.

You need to be willing to think outside the box and also need to be willing to make minor modifications. There are MANY props listed for other engines that will swap onto yours. Example: I took a Ballistic prop hubbed for an OMC. I re-hubbed it for a Force. But, the blades had so much rake that they hit the exhaust snout. SO; I used a stainless two piece collar clamped to the shaft behind the thrust washer and moved the thrust washer around to the prop nut side of the shaft. I gained about 1/4 inch clearance. Read my post from a couple of days ago about test results..

If anybody can get you setup for a Force prop its Frank.Don't mean to but in but::
Frank, doesn't the 98 use a Merc gearcase/leg?I'm assuming Fman is a little green so maybe you could simplify 4" hub for him or even tell what merc application might work.

Re: Research on finding a ss prop for my 120hp force but no luck please help

I don't have and have not yet worked on a very late model Force 120. However, I do have a couple of late model 40, 50, and 70 HP engines. These engines use a Mercury lower unit similar to Merc 40 and the props--10 inch diameter--from the Merc 40 will fit all of them.

During the years leading up to the demise of the Force brand Mercury started making changes to lower units. Two of the most significant was the incorporation of a Merc style water pump with Merc method of keying the impeller to the shaft and a stainless "cup" inside a plastic housing and gearpaks and shimming similar to Merc.

Therefore, it is not unreasonable to assume (ohhh! there's that word again) that the 1998 Force 120 uses a Merc lower unit also. Indeed, the late model Force engines use the same lower unit mounting bolt pattern as Mercury branded engines. Mercury might have used the lower unit from their 90 which is the smaller gearcase. Based on other Force engines, I doubt they used the larger diameter gearcase lower unit. BUT--- The only way to know for sure is either measure the gearcase inside diameter at the prop or have someone on the forum that knows for sure to chime in.

To clarify, Mercury uses two sizes of gearcase diameter: a 4 inch diameter and a 4 1/4 inch diameter which fits larger, more robust gears. Both use the same size 15 spline prop shaft. However, external hub for the larger prop will not slide inside the lip of the smaller gearcase and the smaller diameter prop will leak too much exhaust gases if installed on the large gearcase. So, in either case, all Mercury 15 spline props will not fit the Force lower unit.

Again, as I said before though, you must be willing to think outside the box. Many props are listed for other engines (some foreign for example, but I have not yet tried a Honda prop) yet, in removable hub props the base prop without hub has the same part number while a different removable hub is used for different engines.

If indeed Furyman has a 4 inch lower unit, then this is the same as earlier Force engines and a through hub exhaust prop from 1990 (dual exhaust) -1998 Force engines will work as will props listed for the smaller gearcase merc 90 HP engines.

Wow thanks for the explanation.I did notice that our prop section lists the 4 1/4' Merc gearcase for the 98 120. No other 98 120 props listed of course that may just be less common so not listed.
Of course there might be 98 120s out there with a Force gearcase.
Measure furyman measure.

Re: Research on finding a ss prop for my 120hp force but no luck please help

I am a newbie so what exactly am i measuring on the lower unit?

man boats are fustrating when it comes to replacing parts, lol. Why can't it be like a car? You give a yr make and model and boom you have parts.

From looking it seems that prop selection is based off of diam X pitch and a spline count ? What comes off a stock 98 FORCE 120 HP lower unit? Or how can i find out?

If you read the stickies at the top of the page it will help some.
Prop size numbers are usually near the base of the blades or under the prop nut.
Something like 13 X 17 diameter X pitch.Prop diameter refers to the overall diameter of the prop Gearcase diameter refers to that where the prop fits.Prop diameter is secondary and if you find a prop
that is intended for your motor with a slightly different diameter don't worry about it.
You measure the inside diameter of the gearcase where the prop fits.
My feeling is you will find it is 4 1/4", being a 98 120. If you have a 4" gearcase Through hub props from 1990 - 98 Force will work. But not a 4 1/4".Also those for the smaller gearcase Merc 90.

Re: Research on finding a ss prop for my 120hp force but no luck please help

Heres some info i found on iboats that i didnt see before:
Horsepower: 120 HP
Years: 1995 & Newer
Model: Mercury 4-? Gearcase Outboard
Specs: Thru Hub Exhaust & 15 Tooth Spline

So 4 1/4 gearcase was right, thanks! Now i was told if i am @ manufactures max rpms on 17" pitch alum then i need a 15pitch stainless. is that correcT?

Also the props listed for stainless give a diameter from like 13 1/4 to 13/ 3/4" . Which one do i go with? or whats the difference?

Incorrect! If you are at maximum RPM with a 17 pitch aluminum, Stainless runs about 400 RPM faster; cupping drops RPM. So, you will need either a cupped 17 pitch stainless or a 19 pitch uncupped.

In those props, diameter probably varies a bit with pitch: lower pitch having a slightly greater diameter. However, consensus says that to a degree, diameter does not matter much. Choose the prop with the pitch that best suits your needs

Thanks Frank! I think im on the right track now, one last question, so am i safe to assume most stainless props are cupped? I believe my alum prop now is cupped , the number off of it is 48 773499A4c<-this is backwards 17P .
so what pitch am i looking for if its cupped?

Never assume anything: It makes an A** out of U and ME. Whether a prop is cupped or not depends on the manufacturer or the previous owner. Some are--some are not. That can be checked by a simple email to the manufacturer before buying. You can buy an uncupped prop and if it needs it have it cupped by a prop repair shop.

Not to bring an old post up but just for someone elses research. I ended up with an Michigan Wheel Apollo SS Prop , 17P, with a xhs 102 hub kit.

Very worth the upgrade, didnt notice to much difference on planing, but top end gained 2 mph, and about 300 rpms. now back to around 5200 rpms again WOT. Lovin this new prop. :D

thanks for everyone help!
