I have a 1985 OMC 800 outdrive on my  I/O Cobalt that takes on water in the lower unit. I bought a replacement seal kit from Doug Russell and wonder what I can expect a reputable dealer to charge to install the seals? Also, would it be unreasonable to have the prop seal replaced first to see if that fixes the problem? Thanks! Rich

After reading your post about the Saltwater in your Starter,.........

I'm Guessing that you No Doubt have Problems with that outdrive that a Seal Kit Probably Won't Fix............

And,...... I'd be More Concerned with Finding a Competent Tech who Knows how to rebuild your Dinosaur,........
Than want it's going to Cost.........
Cost will be determined by the local labor rate........

To offset the naysayers... That lower unit is basically the same as all the V-4, V-6 Johnny Rudes out there.

The proper way to address the problem is a pressure test first to find the leak.

Is the drive off the boat?

KaGee,

I understand your point ... and if that lower came off like an outboard I would't have a problem about them.
Last two I did,we had to cut the shift cable to remove the drive.$330.00 a half hour into the job.

DHP

Re: Resealing Lower Unit:

DHP I am supposing that saltwater is the culprit for mussing up the intermediate housing?

I am fresh water only here. So, I forget what you guys go through sometimes.

Even here, I have to shoot the cable with silicone spray to get her ready to pull through. And a second hand is always a help.

Re: Resealing Lower Unit:

KaGee & others, thanks for taking time to respond. The outdrive is still on the boat and everything works fine. The only problem is after about 3 outings in fresh or salt water the gear grease looks like milk and I have to change it. I also found if I put 85/140 lube in the lower unit it does not wash out it just turns milky. From now on it's fresh water only until I get everything sealed. Rich

Only use the proper gear lube in that case or you will be asking for further trouble.
