i know its the wrong forum, but had to share with the omc guys.
off work today and went for a drive to get out of the house, came across a 1968 ( i believe) evinrude mate at the end of a driveway with a for sale sign on it. wasnt really interested, but the motor was in great shape and if the price was right ...maybe. well the price was wrong at $150. while i was talking to the seller i noticed a 50's era johnson leg and lu peaking out from behind a shed 50 yards away. asked about it and the gent said it was an old motor he was gunna scrap. asked if i could have a look, and he said sure. this is what it was! and he was going to separate the aluminum from the steel with a sledge hammer!! he figured he could get $30 or $40 bucks for scrap, i had three $20's in my pocket....its now rescued!
not seized, feels like great compression ( will test tho) and is 100% complete.

Come to my basement, hundreds to choose from, lol.

Samo_Ott from this forum is also in Ottawa, I think he has more than me. Im sure he could give you a deal on something. Not many meets out in your area, which is the best spot to find a motor. AOMCI members are not quite as greedy as the classified vultures, and are honest so you know you are getting a good motor usually. Should come out one afternoon. Check out the club website

AWESOME find! I love the reverse two tone paint jobs on the '58. Fingers crossed that the compression checks out.

Sounds like you better tune up the wife before you get to the motor. Dinner out or ... Happy wife, happy life!

Great deal on a nice motor! I have the very same motor myself and had been running a '57 emblem on it until I found a '58 emblem at a Mapleleafchapter swap meet last April. Your motor & emblem appear to be in very decent condition. All you need now is a pressure tank.

had planned on a try in the barrel tonight, but it failed the spark test....nothing on top, strong on bottom. had a look , and the coils are original and both cracked. time for a grocery list!!

What I would like to know is: "Who in the right mind would beat a fine classic like that apart with a sledge hammer and scrap it??"

Thank you for saving one more gem. :)

I can tell already, that motor will be a nice runner.

i know what you mean! when i was standing with the guy talking, i was looking at his recycle pile and could see lawnmower odds n ends, tons of ob stuff that could be identified, aluminum rain gutter etc.....but it was all taken apart by hammer. i cant believe his thought was that the motor was old and worth more for scrap than what it would be worth to sell as a motor!!he has been doing the same thing for 20 years....gathering up ob's , lawn mowers, chain saws from the seasonal cottage people ....if it ran.... he'd sell it road side. if he couldnt get it to run....scrap it. i felt a tear coming to my eyes!
