I have a Sunbird 1989 SWL 200 boat which is a walkaround and weighs 3025 dry (and has a 67 gal tank). No motor. Max recommended motor size is 175 for this hull. Will a 150 hp engine work? I.e., a 2000 Johnson 150 carbed?

yes, as long as it is not a Ficht. but you never have too much, just too little.

Only depends on how fast you want to go . . .

I would research the motors in this size range for torque output, especially at specific RPM's. Also the motor weight. And without question, the reliability of the specific motor you are considering. HP is not as important a boat balance. A 67 Gallon tank sounds large for this size boat, so where is located is also something to consider. With that HP you will want Trim Tabs.

actually, i'm pretty sure an operational ficht will work.

my first boat was a sunbird 20 cc w/ 150 johnson. pushed it along just fine. but if you're looking for that engine type and class, i can't imagine a 175 being much more expensive. i'd go with that.

Time, Target 3/4 of the max HP rating for your motor. I have a 21 foot dual console rated fro 200HP. My 150 Johnny (carb) does real well to push it. I have plenty of power.

Try the hull for a season before deciding whether you need trim tabs. My 21 footer is so nose heavy that I don't need them.

Re: Repowering recommendation

Thanks a lot guys! I can proceed now with the 150 without worrying. I think I'm getting a real good deal on this engine for $3000, about a $1000 or $1500 less than what a comparable Johnson 2000 150 or 175 is selling for around here. I know the dealer and they say they've checked it out and all is ok.

Prices are ridiculous.
