If a boat has a max. HP rating of 400 hp is there a rule of thumb to determine a minimum HP for the same boat?
What are risks of underpowering assuming one would be willing to sacrifice speed?

Re: Repowering Question

Usually a boat running maximum horsepower is a thirsty boat. Even if you don't run the engines wide open to get the speed. The most economical speed with an outboard is usually around 3000 - 3500 rpm and that should translate to a speed that just keeps your boat on plane for the maximum efficiency in big water. Powering down to a couple of 150's will not cost you a lot of USABLE speed but it will increase your effective range and efficiency.
An engine doesn't really care how much weight it is pushing as long as it is propped correctly for the application. Large v-6's should turn between 5300 and 5800 rpm at full throttle on any boat. Propping to get around 5300 will increase fuel mileage and load handling ability, prooping more toward the upper RPM will increase boat speed some.

Hope this helps

yancey19
