Can anyone tell me how complicated it is to replace the power heads on a 87' Merc 150.

I'm thinking of doing it myself, but I've never done it before. This site and others offer rebuilt power heads, but you need to 'do-it-yourself'.

Any advise is welcome. Thanks John.

Shop Manual for your engine is first. After that a video camera. Flim everything up close before you put a wrench to it. As you remove screws, nuts, bolts and smaller pieces of the engine put them into different labeled containers. I use 1 gal plastic tubs that cole slaw comes in at deli's. As you clear different parts away flim what you see under them. After that it's just a matter of following the manual and have a hoist to lift the old and lower the new powerhead onto the mid section.

hes right i would take notes to there are alot of parts only work on one thing at a time that way you wont remove and store parts nuts and bolts and washeres in a mixed up way when you store your parts in whatever i would at least spray them down with a lubricant WD 40 etc. you will need a complete gasket set for the whole motor piston rings to be safe make sure your new power heads are to stock spec so the pistons fit right or whatever there gonna be bored to if they are gonna be over spec larger <I reccomend wiseco pistons they can make what ever size you need >heck if you need more help just get on here every body helps everybody

I maybe mistaken but an rebuilt power head should be an assembled block crank rods pistons and all together.....just have to add your carbs (after rebuild) ignition flywheel etc. Whats the standard in the marine industry?
