Recently purchased a 31'6" Chris Craft Stinger. 1988 w/ twin 225 Johnsons, no trailer. One motor making noise. Decided to rebuild the power head without knowing what the trouble realy is. Is that stupid? My next question is, should I rebuild both? they have 400hrs according to the meter and not buy a trailer right away. Have monies for 2nd rebuild or trailer. Also sorry  the third thing is everyone I talk to says diconected the oil injection and mix gas manually? is that the thing to do with Johnsons? I had a Yamaha on my last boat and had no trouble at all for 5 years.
I really think this is a tremendous service you all provide and I commend you all for your knowledge and patients with us new comers.

hi-five,
I think I'd find out where the "noise" was coming from before I broke out the heavy ordnance. It could be a bird nest under the flywheel or something else simple. Examine plugs, (they can tell ya beaucoup) check compression, is fuel old or fresh, noise might be l/u, etc.

c/6

Hooty

I agree with Hooty wholeheartedly.Generally when these things start making noise in the powerhead a serious problem has already occured and will be evident with a comp. test or head removal. Crank bearings can also cause noise but usually just let loose and the story is over.Flywheel magnets can come loose ,gearcase failures will radiate their noise up to the p.h . area and sometime fool you.Sounds like you've already commited to the rebuild but have them check the condition of the gear oil while your at it.

These motors usually run far more hrs than 400 before rebuild, 1000 or 1500, often more wouldnt be unusual.

I see no piont in rebuilding if the motor is running well and have good compression.

Thanks You guys... I have commited to rebuilding the PH because the seller said he checked the price. so I assume he had it checked out. I picked up the boat for $13,000 and planned to spend about $20,000 so I have the money to rebuild. I think I did OK? Did I???
I will bring it home though and check the things you all have mentioned and if there are any other ideas let me know. Should I turn it over with the plugs out and attemt to elict the noise or might that make the problem worse?

Hi_five, you need to find a good, honest mechanic or friend with motor knowledge to help you out. Did you have the rig surveyed before purchase? I would say rebuilding the PH before finding the source/cause of the noise could be a bit hasty.
