Here's some more repower issues. I may be approaching that decision point soon.

First of all, does anyone know what a 1993 90 degree 225 hp (25" shaft) weighs? It's not a current model so can't get stats off the Yamaha web site.

The choices seem to be (1) a four-stroke 225, but I am worried about the weight (583 lbs?). Mine is on a bracket and that tends to accentuate any rear overweight problems.

Or (2) an HPDI, that seems to be less of a weight issue (although I think it's still heavier than mine), but they only come in 200 (466 lbs) and 250 (540 lbs).

The 200 HPDI is obviously the best choice from a weight standpoint (and cost), but I hate to underpower the boat (although they did sell a lot of them with 200 hp engines) or maybe I won't notice 25 hp that much?

Any opinions? Sort of feel like I have no good choice here.

Boat is a ProLine 1993 walkaround

I found some specs on a 2000 model, while not a 1993 it is probably close. It says it weighs 453 lbs so give or take a few lbs.

Another point to think about is how often you use the boat. I live in bayou county and my friends and I put mad hours on engines. I have a crab buddy that runs a 24 ft skiff with a 250 suzuki, it is three years old and has 4000 hours on it. he went to four stroke for the fuel consumbtion. He loves his suzuki and has nothing but oil changes done to it.

I don't think that 25 hp will be missed if you deciced to go with the HPDI.

Hope this helps, good luck

Bayou Thunder

I repowered a 1989 Pursuit which had 225 Evinrudes, with 225 Suzuki 4 strokes. The engines mount on the transom, but the boat sits way too low in the back. The tilt and trim cylinders are completely submerged at all times. I also had corrosion problems with the Suzuki's. Don't get them if the boat stays in the water all the time.

I would recommend the 200 HPDI's. The weight is closer and you get improved fuel consumption and less noise.

As for power, what are the odds that your '93 Yamaha is putting out all of its rated horsepower? I don't think you will see any loss of performance.

Good point, after 12 years in the salt, although it still seems to run pretty well. But what's going to kill it is corrosion - I afraid to to look at the shift shaft on the next impeller change - and the tiller is rusted to s**t. Some day I'm gonna make a left turn and the engine is gonna make a right.... Neither part is changeable without a powerhead removal, and forget the powerhead bolts coming off cleanly at this point.

I am assuming that whatever they did in 1995 or so to make it a "Saltwater Series" means the HPDI engines are more immune to these things.

Would you happen to know what fuel sending unit /float you have. I also have a 93 230 wa with the 109 gallon tank... and my fuel gauge is wrong
