Hope this is rite forum. Looks like I need to replace my 1985 Evinrude. I need to get the best priced new four stroke I can. Really trying to do this as cheap as possible. I am just sick of dumping cash in this old motor. I am looking for advice on what is the best value for a new one. I will need the motor, controls, gauges, and prop. So far I got a price on a Honda 20? shaft 150 with controls, gauges, and prop for 13,000 installed. Any suggestions on possible better value would be appreciated. It will be pushing a 20? Mako CC.

IF you have dealers in the area the Suzuki DF150 is usually priced quite well, and well proven. Mercury also has the new non-Verado 150 that's priced quite well also.

Friend has one and it is very quiet and idles all day with no issue. he is very happy with it. Never an issue starting and he says he gets great gas milage.

The Yammie 150HP 4 stroke is bullet proof as is the Suzuki. Take your time and see if you can find a new in box late model motor. When I was looking to repower last year I ran into several under $10K

If you have your heart set on a 4 stroke the Suzukis are hard to beat. And from what I understand dealers are willing to deal. Customer of mine recently picked up a pair of 185s at the boat show for 25K. Incl rigging?!

If you're gonna run in salt water I'd steer away from the Honda. Mebbe things have changed but I've personally seen some serious corrosion problems on fairly new motors.

Having said that. The 2 strokes have come a long way. Got a buddy with a 150 Etec on a Wellcraft V20. He operates a water taxi service in Boca Grande. He runs that motor, well, like a taxicab? Gotta gazillion hours on it. Runs like a champ!

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Wow, Thanks for all the input. I was thinking Honda but with the post about corrosion it is out of question. Boat will be in a slip. leaning toward a 4 stroke Suz or the etec 2 stroke. i will shop hard.

Honda builds great cars'n motorcyles, etc. But 'round here at least their boat motors aren't very well liked. Buddy had a '04 225 and the water jacket literally turned to dust. Had a few hours on it but was kept on a lift and flushed after use? You shoulda seen that block, looked like swiss cheese. Yikes! He repowered with a Yammie btw.

Being in the canvas & cushion business I spend a fair amount of time around boats. I always make a point to ask people how they like their outboards. (On the slim chance I might be able to afford a new one someday ...) Yamaha & Suzuki run neck'n neck, with Honda a distant second. Mercs are in the back seat. In the 4 stroke category that is.

Far as 2 strokes go Etec is the hands down favorite. There have been a few bugs with the bigger ones but you'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't love their 150. Go fast guys like the Mercs but for average everyday use I'd vote Etec.

Yes. Shop Hard. Ya, keep us posted.

If I had a Mako, and I looked back, I'd love to see an Etec hanging back there; that's for sure.

Down here old Makos are coveted. Rich guys close up the transom & hang new Yammies on a bracket/jack plate. Wellcraft V20s and old Aquasports are still popular too. Sometimes makes me wish me wish I'd hung onto my old 21' Aquaslug WAC. Had a 185 Erude on it. Always ran purty good but boy could that pig burn some fuel.

But I digress ...

Re: Repower best value 150 4 stroke ?

Ok here is here i am at with motor installed. . Suzuki 4 stroke , $15,000 for controls and guages. honda 4 stroke 150 controls and guages. $13,000. optimax same stuff $12,500. Waiting for etec price. Now i have a tough descision. My hull is old. A 1974 mako20. I been thinking of getting a different boat. Been looking at a 20 foot Angler. I have found some in the 14 to 18 grand range with optimax or yamaha 4 strokes on them. Found a bunch with Mercury saltwater motor on them. Really been staying away from the saltwater motor. I want good fuel milage on the next one i get . I am at point do i spend that much to put motor on the mako or just upgrade to a used 2004 to 2005 Angler. Big discision for me and big money. (for me) The mako takes a 20 inch shaft. worried that when i do eventually upgrade the hull that i will be needind a 25 inch shaft. Leaning towards the mid 2000's Angler. Ugh. need someone to push me in the rite direction.
thanks again

where are you located? all those prices, except the Honda, seem pretty high to me. A DF150 is running 12,500 OTD which included Gauges, controls, rigging, tax. Optimax around the same and the Honda/Yamaha 4 strokes ~14,000 OTD turn key. I'm actually quite shocked at the Suzuki price listed, that dealer must not move many engines.

If you canbeat the fuel mileage of an Opti, let me know; it's probably worth publishing somewhere. :)
