I'm shopping online for a back up replacement belt for my 97, 4.3 v6 mercrusier. I want to make sure I get the right one but don't have the part number with me. What do you guys think?

See if there is a manufacturer name and part number on the back side of your existing belt. Generally you don't need a part number. Engine manufacturer, type, and year will generally suffice. You might even try your local auto parts store. Belts are belts - take the existing one with you.

Post your engine serial number, one of us can look up the merc part number for you.

I recently wrote down all the #'s off my belt and walked into a local AutoZone, it took them 10 seconds to cross-reference in their computer and sold me one right from their stock for $3.99.

Nope, it was just the standard waterpump/alternator drive belt on a 3.0. I imagine a serpentine would be a little harder to match up, but I'd bet they could do it with maybe a 1 to 2 day wait time if they have to order it from the supplier.

Freeskimon, I have also had good luck finding the belts at a local auto parts store. They were about 1/2 the price of Mercury. They were able to cross the Merc part numbers.

Checked on the price of a serpentine belt for my 2004 5.0L at my local Mercury parts dealer. I almost had a heart attack! Check the auto parts stores first.

Here's a Merc parts dealer quote I got on a serpentine belt for a 2004, 5.0L (carb), Mercruiser.

Part Number: M578638764
List Price: $70.25

Yikes!!! This dealer usually gives me at least 10% off list price on parts but that would still be over $60!

The price I got for a serp. belt for 4.3 MPI/EFI
was $74.95. Gotta be a match somewhere, I was told to try NAPPA. My boat sits in the water a 100 miles away and I dont have the no. of the belt, but I will fix taht this weekend. If I find an outlet for thses belts Ill let the world know.
Capt.Skid

NAPA may be able to look it up by application. They list some marine parts.
