I need to replace 8 wobble rollers (the whole set on the tail), black rubber type, 4" on a 3/4"spindle on the trailer-shorelander trailer. At least 2 of them on the tail of the trailer are split with a metal piece popping through or almost through. This type of roller has metal sleeve/bushings, metal washers and cotter pins through the spindles.

will these be hard to replace and is there any way to do it without floating the boat? I could float it and work on the rollers in the parking lot if it isn't too big of a deal. I have seen several posts refer to hog rings on rollers- what is that? Thanks.

Joe

http://www.championtrailers.com/
Look here then find a local shop (Boaters World/West Marine, even here on IBoats) or order from them. You can use jacks and wood blocks and lift the boat enough to work it.

May I ask -- how do you remove the pins that look like a "W" that hold the rollers on?

If I understand your question and you are talking about what I think you are - pry them off with an awl or ice pick.

The yellow poly rollers are much better and less apt to mark your boat.

You should be able to do it in the parking lot if you bring the correct tools. It shouldn't take long, just don't do it on a busy Sunday afternoon! The rollers may be attached with "pal nuts".

If so, buy replacements, they can't be reused.

Re: replacing wobble rollers

thanks for the feedback guys. Bought the black rubber ones today and plan to work on it this weekend floating the boat- I can't picture jacking it up off the trailer and working comfortably on it.

Are all these rollers attached differently? mine seem straightforward- metal washer, metal insert/bushing, another washer and cotter pin through the shaft.

the only real problem I forsee is the amount of rust on the one u-shaped clamp holding the keel roller- any suggestions about freeing it?

Joe

If it is a hog ring, and it snaps off, you have to drill it out, or drill a hole right threw it and put a big cotter pin in it.

Re: replacing wobble rollers

this project got sidelined by other chores, etc. at home so I hope to do it this coming weekend.

this trailer is set up with one keel roller about mid way on the trailer. odd thing is its position is lower than the other wobble rollers and never makes contact with the hull once the boat is completely on the trailer. is that the normal position?

when loading the boat first contacts the 8 wobblers on the stern of the trailer, then in moving up makes brief contact with that stern roller before ending up on the bow wobblers.

it seems odd to me, but what do i know!

Joe

It may load differently on other ramps with a different angle.

Re: replacing wobble rollers

Finally got the chance to change the rollers only to discover that the old ones had metal inserts that didn't fit these old rollers and the new ones have the same problem.
Does anyone know if Shorelander trailers have special sized rollers to fit their metal inserts?

ron-
I didn't think about ramps with different angles and how that might affect loading on the trailer. You probably are right. thanks.
Joe
