Replacing upper - what else?

I am replacing the upper half of my drive with an SEI106 1.94 upper. I currently have a 1987 Alpha 1 120. While I am there, I will also replace the impeller (since I'm already there). I presume there are additional seals I will need to replace between the upper and lower? Also - is there any other items I should replace while I'm in there? I'm going to purchase the SEI Install Kit which includes all new O-Rings / Bell Housing gasket / hardware. The 21 year old hardware on the boat is all bunged up from the PO.

Why are you replacing only the upper? If it was because of gear failure in the upper, that would gaurentee the lower is also contaminated with metal. Put a new upper on that, and you will soon loose both.

I posted about this earlier - long yolk is shot, I chipped a couple teeth off the retainer ring (big castle nut), the upper seal needs to be replaced, and the u-joints, obviously, still need to be replaced. The estimate from the shop for parts and labor is significantly more than the $600 for a new upper (unless the mechanic I've been using is a scam artist who's ripping me off on the labor). If he is, let me know so I can start looking elsewhere.

If you are using a Merc dealer, they aren't ripping you off. If you need the long splined shaft and there was any oil in the bellows, then you would probably need a new inner yoke also as they get a groove in them and leak (Was there gear lube in the bellows by any chance) At that point, you would need a compete ujoint assembly. They go for $485.
Along with the other parts like the input shaft seal, the retainer nut and other gasket kits new gear lube and their $600 sounds a little light. But they got to see it, we didn't.
So yes, your upper only would be a good choice.

Yes - small amount of oil in the bellows... Their quote was ~ $1000... NOT a Merc dealer - small independent shop that a friend referred me to. For that price - $600 for a whole new upper + warranty is a bit more attractive...
