Upper shift cable broke on my circa '98 5litre Merc Cruiser with Alpha One OD. This unit has the bracket that mounts to the motor where upper and lower cables attach, and a plastic spacer. I noticed the spacer was broken so I ordered a new one along with the cable.

Couple quick questions:
1) I'm assuming that by adjusting the new cable end and the spacer to the same setting as the old that things should be pretty much be calibrated and good to go. Is this a valid assumption? I'll test shifting at low rpms in the driveway with the muffs on the OD, and then do some sea trials before taking a long trip.
2) What the heck does that spacer do? I looked at the mechanism and was hard pressed to determine it's role in the scheme of things? Could it's breakage have led to the cable breaking?
3) I'm looking for a good set of instructions for this procedure and my Seloc manual stinks!!! In lieu of spending the coin for a good shop manual this week anyone have a ptr to a page or 2 that describes this?

Thanks in advance
Erich Gruber
